G'day All,

I'm rather new to Doac (2 days) and I was wondering if the kind members of this forum (grovel grovel) might be able to offer me some advice..

I've created a wizard character (now lvl6) in Albion and I've read that there are quests every 5 lvls. If this is the case how do I get them.. I've tried taking to my trainer but nothing.... Have I missed the boat by being lvl6? Do i need to talk to someone special??

When I went to the trainer, he gave me the option of /respec which allowed me to move my character points around (?). There were also a realm points(?) option underneath it. How do I get realm points? What are they?

How do I get other skills? Like the crafting ones? Do I have to do missions? or pay an NPC?? Can you increase the skill levels - get like cloth-10 and stuff?

Also, thinking about it... How the hell do I talk to ppl players.. Is it the /send command? Is there a chat box that everyone can see - like eve??

Thanks in advance

Okay, first the talking debacle:
/s or /say is to talk out loud. Everyone in a certain vincinity can read this.
/yell is to.. well, yell... works thesame as /say but with a larger radius.
/send is to privately say something to someone else. noone but you and him/her can read this and it's range is unlimited.
/gu is for chatting in your guild.
/g is for chatting in your group.
/bu is chatting in your battlegroup.
/cg is for chatting in your chatgroup.

the epic quests are those that start about every 5 levels, and it starts at level 7. your trainer will send you to the capital and bladieblahblah... get questies etc...

If you want crafting skills, go to the crafting masters. Not all classes can be every craftertype

Realmpoints are a sort of experience points you receive when killing other people, not NPC's. You can get kinda nifty abilities for those points.

I'd advice you to check /social and flag yourself as looking for a guild, and join a guild that has an active support for brand new players.

BTW. You can find a lot more information about this game on (for instance) the camelot herald. In the menu on the left you can find entries like "Slash commands", "Tradeskills", "Classes and Races" and other items that might, or might not be interresting :D

Have fun in the game, and if you need more advice, try the /advise command, and contact one of the persons on that list with
/advice [name] yadda yadda question :D (without the [] brackets ofcourse) :)

Hello Wayne,

No there's no global chat system in DAOC (thanks goodness, EQ2s global channels are just a recipe for spammage). There are multiple channels which come up in your chat window in different colours (assuming you havn't set them to all be the same!).

If you join a guild, you will have a guild channel. The guild might also be part of the alliance, and providing the guild has given you sufficient authority to listen and talk on the alliance channel this potenially gives you a channel which reaches a lot of people. As you mentioned, "/send playerName blah blah" sends the text "blah blah" to a particular player (playerName in this case). When you join a group (or a battle group, don't worry about these until you progress a bit) you can talk on the group channel.

As a quick summary, the following commands talk on the channels:

/send Private message
/gu Guild chat
/bc Battle group chat
/g Group chat
/b Broadcast - sends a message in blue to all people in the local area (ie. used in a castle everyone in the castle sees this - use sparingly please!)
/say Speaks, readable by all people in close range
/y Yells, readable by all people within a slightly further range than /say
/cg Chats in a chat group which you can set up and invite people from all over your realm
/ac Chats on the alliance channel

Unless you have quit your started guild, you should find you can speak on /gu. Ask any specific questions on there - you may get an answer (or you may just get abuse, its such a friendly game!)

As for quests, there are quests throughout the game at most levels. The problem is just finding them. Generally they involve finding an NPC and chatting to them (right click on them and click or say the highlighted text to progress through the conversation). Sometimes your trainer will give you a quest. Names guards will also give you "kill tasks" up to 20th level. At each level the guard who gives you the task changes, so you have to find which one it is (using trial and error). These quests are generally very simple "go and kill monster X and return to me", and give a solid xp award and a little coin. I don't know about the kill task guards, but generally any NPC which has a quest which you are eligable to take have a rotating yellow circle at their base.

There are now however better rewards to be found in the Catacombs dungeon (if you have that expansion enabled in your license). I havn't got a lot of experience with this dungeon so I won't go into detail, but there are plenty of quests and "instanced dungeons" in here to help new players.

As for Realm Points - these are the reward you get for killing other players (only possible in frontiers and battlegrounds (special PVP zones unlike Eve where you can kill anyone anywhere) unless you are playing on Camlann (a pvp server where you can kill anyone anywhere)). Similarly to levelling, they offer rewards as you collect more and more. At Forest Sauvage you can port to these battlegrounds (they are tiered into 4-level zones, for example Thidranki (probably the most popular battleground) is for levels 20-24 only.

Crafting is a tradeskill you aquire from tradeskill masters in the capital cities (Camelot and Gothwaite Harbour for you). With the exception of Alchemy and Spellcrafting, I'm afraid you won't be able to make much money on these, most people will only pay what it costs you to make something (and it can take many hours to make particular quality items). I'm aftraid DAOCs crafting mechanism is deadfully dull, if I were you I'd avoid it as I've a feeling they will revamp it soon to be a lot more interesting. Find a nice groups of players who are in a guild, and try and join their guild and make use of the guild crafters. As a Wizard, you will only be able to be a Tailor or a Spellcrafter.

Finally, useful sites for further reading:

http://www.camelotherald.com/index.shtml <-- Mythic's home site for news (note our servers are not run by Mythic (the games designer), and so updates announced on there can take 3-6 months to appear on our servers)

http://www.classesofcamelot.com/ <-- omg its all gone blue... ok someone must be updating it still! Great resource for base class information, easy to navigate around

http://www.visionofsages.net/toa/ <-- Trials of Atlantis information (one of the expansions which added a lot of content to DAOC). Out of date in parts now unfortunately.

http://www.ping.de/~sven/daoc/configurator.html <-- Realm Point configuration tool

http://www.duskwave.com/daoc/index.php <-- OMG its working!!! A league table for DAOC players. Measure how good you are in comparision to everyone else here. Only seems to work properly if you are in a guild (it relies on an XML datastream from GoA which has a tendancy to go offline for months at a time).
