My boss just told me we are going to change the computer naming convention and asked me to find a tool that will generate names and keep a record of the names already used.

Google doesn't seem to like me today because I can't find anything remotely useful.

Anyone know of a tool capable of these things?

Think that's a no, did something similar myself before some morons decided we'd be better off playing around with domains and Novell "just because we could". Ended up just doing it manually :/

Aye, you could generate some VB script easily to generate the name, then populate it in an Excel spreadsheet, which also then gives you the option to export as text file, which can then be incorporated into a WMI script, or you could link directly to the excel object from the script if you prefer.

The guys handling this in our organisation use a custom tool built inhouse, unfortunately I couldn't get it even if I wanted to :)
