The best performance boost that's affordable is to double the RAM.
A thing that a lot of people forget is the number of programs starting up at the same time when booting up.
Go to Start > Run > msconfig
Click the "Startup" tab.
Then go through the items one by one. If you don't know what something is, search for the program name online to get an idea of what it does or who made it. If you don't absolutely need it during startup, untick the box.
Restart your computer and see if the reduced number of startup programs makes a difference to the machine's performance.
FOr example, do you really need Google, Java and mobile phone update programs all launching at startup? You'll need your keyboard/mouse driver so leave that one.
