Comodo Firewall

Anyone else got this ?

I had a stack of problems with ZoneAlarm, the main being that it jammed up a file under the System Restore directory and stopped my virus scanner from working, in the end I took everyone's advice and ditched it.

Comodo Firewall seemed the nect best (free) alternative, the latest release (3.0) claims to fix all the bugs that dotted it for years.

My system has sped up after getting rid of ZoneAlarm, I am thanking my luck as I was just on the verge of buying the "Pro" version.

I went with comodo after getting sick of the bloatware that zonealarm has become. Then comodo got upgraded after I got the pro version. Now it is bloatware too.

Windows XP/Vista firewall?

I've never seen the point in these excessive security applications. I've got a router which acts as a firewall and NAT and the Windows XP firewall. I know it can be nice to slightly more options as the Windows firewall is fairly basic, it just seems like a waste of resources to me.

I have comodo running on my Vista machine at the moment and so far no problems.

I re-downloaded Comodo for use on another machine (don't personally firewall here further than my router) and I agree it appears to have been bloated out a bit recently.
It's a pain in the arse really - we can't keep expecting something for nothing though and of course these people are only essentially loss-leading or finding other ways of funding their wares.

I can't really sit here and say to anyone "just stick with windows firewall and your router" because then I'm just opening people who take that advice to possible issues and I don't like seeing people take unnecessary risks. It is however something that many of us would be fine with; not because we're better than anyone else but because we're just that little more careful with the sites we go to and the details we give out.
Obviously someone with a computer also used by their teenage kids who've just discovered the joys of free porn and the associated nasty cookies etc will certainly need to take the necessary steps.

I'm no expert with security or networks per-se, something I'm still learning myself, but I do know it's not worth taking the risk if there's more to a computer than just a single person using it

none of the software firewalls for windows are any good or particularly efficient because of the crappy way they have to hook into the network stack to do their work. The windows firewall is probably the best around and works fairly well. Couple it with NAT and some brainpower and you'll be fine.
