not bad for a few hours work :)

I'm not too keen on gradient shading in your text divs (are they still divs in xhtml? I'm out of date a bit :)) the main background I like, the one in the text box I'm not too keen on. I'm pleased with your high-contrast look though. too many pages out there in the pale-pastel region of web imo.

is there a way you can control the gradient shader? like having only the bottom 10% of the page shade or some such?

Margins!

Even with huge margins, it still doesn't fit well in 800x600 :p

I think the problem with designing 'generic' sites for anyone to use is you have no way to theme it really, so its very difficult to add much flare. But as a blank canvas for someone to use its very decent, not too keen on the green though, I have always been of the opinion that you should stick to two main colours for a website.

Like the gradients though, i'm a big fan at the moment also..

My latest 'design' if your interested although its only a photoshop mock at the moment.

Hmm, fair point. Actually it fits fine in 800x600 for me. But tbh if you're in 800x600 I don't care. Accessibility clients tend to use higher resolutions and make text larger rather than lower res anyway.

And if anyone is using a more sensible resolution (1024x768, 1280x1024 or higher) they have huge margins if the browser window is maximised. Both linked pages look ridiculous maximised at 1680x1050.

When the layout doesnt make use of at least the majority of the window space available I call it poor design. Perhaps more of a problem is that if larger fonts are used (eg ctrl+scroll-wheel in FF) the design kinda falls apart, with text overlapping elements its not intended to, etc.

Shame really, looks pretty decent otherwise.

That's personal preference, quite a lot of websites only use the middle of the screen.

It all expands nicely for me, that's why it was designed with em and not px etc.

The subcontent footer has the wrong background colour if it gets too big (I inverted the gradient at the end and forgot to change the bg colour) and as it gets ridiculously big the nav links at the top go on multiple lines, other than that nothing overlaps or anything.

I quite like it myself, nice and simple, and don't mind gradients at all. You can easily make different styles anyway with different colour gradients or no gradients at all.

You can also use styles to create different widths according to personal choice. I much prefer centered layouts like that than those that are all over to the left, increasingly more so as the resolution increases.

Looks good to me but I'm not too sure about your choice of colours, quite similar to the show pages of tv.com though.
