Coast - exhibition

Hope this is ok to drop this in here.

In November last year I emailed Moors Valley to see if any of my images were suitable for an exhibition in their beamed barn visitor centre. On 15th January, they emailed back to say yes and I had the barn from 14 March to 10 May 2009.

There's space for about 15-20 A3 sized images and a separate display for up to 6 decent sized ones. I'm likely to go for about 7-8 mono/duotone shots plus the same for colour. There's a fair amount of work in choosing the images to suit a theme let alone printing, mounting and framing. I'm also straight up after the touring Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition so no pressure there. Previous exhibitors have been Mark Bauer and Adam Burton.

So, if you're around Hampshire/Dorset for those dates, please drop by. Marketing is not a strong point of mine and to date I've only made some Moo postcards to send to the three people I know plus work colleagues.

Superb Milou, I really like your work and it's an inspiration to a startup pretender like myself , keep us posted on how it goes. I'd deffo be there if it was my neck of the woods, but Skirtland is miles away from everywhere!

You should get promoting these a lot more; I went to buy a 2009 calendar the other day and all I could find locally was Colin Baxster's 'Scotland' which (although very good) isn't as artistic as your work.

Ever fancied the Trossachs -> Rannoch Moor -> Glencoe tour?

What filters are you using there Milou? I have a Lee matte box tucked away somewhere, I really must start using it again.

Tom - I use Lee 0.3/0.6/0.9 ND grads, and a Lee 0.9ND plus a polariser. If I use the polariser and need a grad, I handhold the grad as the Lee polariser/grad set-up would cost another £250 or so. For the really long exposures (80 to 300 secs etc) I use the B+W 10 stop ND. I bought mine from WarehouseExpress for about £56 for the 77mm screw-thread.

My method is to tend to stop down to f/8, f/11 or f/16, use ISO50 or 100 for the low noise aspect and engage mirror lock-up. After focusing, I click to lock the mirror up, whack on the filter and open the shutter with a shutter release cable. Alternatively you can use auto-focus and then switch to manual focus before putting on the filter. You can't see anything through the lens with it on.

I use a Canon timed remote which enables me to dial in how many seconds I want the shutter to open. It's best to experiment but after a while, you get a feel for how long the shutter needs to be open, and always use the histogram as a guide. If you use f/16 and the 10 stop around dusk, be prepared for exposures of 400 seconds. The resulting noise has to be dealt with in post-processing.

I find that the use of the filter has to bring something extra to the image, e.g. I took a shot of a waterfall with and without the 10 stop - both images (at 4 and 270 seconds) looked the same.

That's a pretty tame part of the Etive, I've paddled it - awesome river. Right-angle falls is sweet. 20ft waterfall into a safe plunge pool

Maybe you could use two polarisers if you have the rotatey bit on that kit.

I've fitted the 10 stop first and then put a 77mm Lee adapter ring onto the filter so I can use grads. Doing it this way, I use auto-focus and then switch to manual focus on the lens before putting on the 10 stop etc.

My son and I put the images up this morning. Square frames - 16 x 16" and landscapes 20 x 16". Originally I had wanted to do eight or ten really large shots but fixing to the beams isn't allowed so the frames had to fit the panels.
