Same as before you fucktard, it's an example that any particular item can be considered expensive in comparison to its material value. I'm not discussing soft drinks either you spacker.

Additionally, learn to fucking read. My only real point is that solar energy should be better exploited. You and everyone else's opinion on climate change, who cares? Bottom line is that if solar was cheaper and you could whack a panel on your house/flat for £100.00 that would generate "some" electricity, you'd be a prick not to do it.

But then, you are a prick.

Does that mean Bodhi would not get one then :)

No offence Tom but that video is YEARS old the analysis is over mate it's fairly obvious that change has come about because of humans.

I just think the huge melting of the ice in the artic screams out climate change.

No, it is far from obvious. It's like putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 4.2, but then just rounding the answer down because it conveniently fits the expected result.

A famous man once wrote "If the history of the world was a book, mankind would barely read a full sentence" (or something similar, i forget the actual quote). Just because this has never been seen by man before, does not mean it is not an entirely natural cycle of events that spans millennium rather than centuries.

Volcanos account for more carbon in the atmosphere than anything mankind can produce for example. Perhaps man has contributed to speeding-up a natural process, but many firmly believe it is a natural event and there is a lot of extremely solid evidence to support this claim.

If you don't want people to touch nerves don't leave em so exposed boy.

And no, I wouldn't fit a solar panel, not in an ideal world as a) they look stupid b) they're not very good c) we don't get much sun. Norway's got the right idea if you ask me - it's all hyrdoelectric power, and Norweigans leave TV's on stnadby, lights on when out, etc etc and don't give a shit. We're not exactly short on rivers in the UK, let's get creative with the dams people. It's already working in Scotland, and we're drunk for most of the time, so you have no excuse.

But touching certain nerves feels so good ;)

Agreed on hydro, we should build a dam and flood most of London, then start over.

I litter, drink, smoke and cheer at american muscle cars and big a** SUV's revving down trees, i eat fast food and drop plastic bags in the middle of the forest. I wish they would get over it and drop down the amazon rainforest so we could build more crap!

I don't give a f*ck about the planet, and the planet doesn't give a f*ck about me. It works.

Regarding Solar Panels, I was looking for info on veggie oil in my car, and found this page:

http://www.lowimpact.org/factsheet_solar_electricity.htm

I think the bit where it says " Taking the annual amount of sunshine into consideration, this will require a 2.4kW system, covering 20m², and costing around £16,000 installed. There is now a 50% government grant in the UK for professionally-installed, grid-connected systems (see below), which will reduce this to £8,000. With electricity at 7.9p per kWh this will save £158 per year, giving a payback time of 50 years, which will come down as fossil fuel prices rise. This system will save 1-2 tonnes of carbon per year. It has to be said though, that pv is only cost-effective for remote locations where the cost of grid connection is prohibitive, or when the satisfaction of obtaining clean energy from the sun is taken into consideration."

Solar Panels for the win!

so according to your findings regarding cost and this from the solar century webby:
What are the lifetimes of PV products?
Short answer:
Long answer: Solar modules have a manufacturers warranty of 20 years and a working lifetime of 40 years and beyond. Modules of all types usually have a twenty year warranty, as do most thin-film integrated products. Crystalline PV slates and PV glass laminates usually have a ten year warranty. These times are only a rough guide and should be checked for each specific product.

one will presumably have to replace their panels before they pay for themselves completely. I also read on the webby that it takes ~5 years for a panel to recoup it's manufacturing energy costs. This combined makes me think that you either go for it all the way or the costs don't make it viable?

Anyone here actually have solar panels? I have a solar multi-purpose charger that I can charge my phone with when somewhere remote. It needs quite some sun to work but it does work.

I looked into getting some a few years back but its still expensive and also quite difficult to get someone who knows about them to install them - a lot depends on the angle of your roof and the alignment of it and makes a big difference to the amount of energy they collect.

I did live briefly in a house entirely heated and hot water produced solely by solar energy but it was in Southern Italy and owned by the WWF :)

Other problems with solar panels include build-up of dirt from the rain, birdcrap damaging them and the things getting blown to pieces in one of our many storms - I also have lime trees nearby that coat everything with a sticky syrup thats very difficult to remove - I could cut the trees down but that might be somewhat counterproductive :).

In a city with high air pollution they will really deteriorate - all these things cause the power output of the cells to fall over their lifetime which throws out all their figures for payback.

The even bigger problem is the rare elements they require - we can never really 'mass' produce them without running out of key elements needed in a lot of other industries/technologies.

As far as I can see they remain a 'vanity' product at the present time until someone comes up with a cheap replacement for them that doesnt require rare elements.

You can still use the sun tho - running black pipes externally on your roof as part of your water heating system would really save a lot of energy and has none of the downside of solar panels.

I think nuclear power is going to be the answer to our energy needs tho - only it and fossil fuel systems produce consistent amounts of power - if we relied on green energy there would be a lot of brownouts or we'd all need a lot of extremely environmentally unfriendly batteries.

You know what really pisses me off?

All this talk about climate this, tax that, save the polar bears the other.....

...duty per litre of vegetable oil is exactly the same as per litre of diesel. And yet vegetable oil is almost carbon neutral as a fuel.

If I want to run my car legally on SVO, it costs more to do that then it does to run it on diesel.

Gordon Brown is an idiot.

Nuclear Fusion would be the answer to our energy needs. It has the advantage of an enormous fuel stockpile (Deuterium and Tritium) while being very safe with non-radioactive waste products.

Now if only they could get it to work :(

At the moment while they can get it to work they can't yet get it to produce more energy on a commercial basis than it takes to initiate the reaction.

Thats what the ITER project hopes to establish - the basis of a commercial fusion reactor - http://www.iter.org/a/index_nav_1.htm

I have no doubt that humans damage the environment. They certainly kill off many plant and animal species.

I do doubt the fact that we are the cause of global warming. We may be helping it a long a little bit but I dont believe we are the cause.

I believe the earth goes in cycles of Ice Age->Warming->Ice Age again...

In fact I would go as far as blaming continental shifts for global warming. You cant move large amounts of land mass and expect climates to remain the same!!

Amen to that :D

People in here have quoted some important and intelligent people, I on the other hand will quote Alan Partridge regarding London -

"S.H.I.T.H.O.L.E, shithole"

Aliens control our enviroment

The planet keeps you alive by providing you with precious oxygen. Stop being such an idiot.

Unfortunately this is probably quite a common ignorance.

Its not only oxygen but also the resources to manufacture drink, cigarettes, american muscle cars, fast food and plastic bags etc...

Leggy will know the answer to this, how much oxygen do the worlds rainforests provide? I used to know and was amazed but also scared by what we are doing to them.

I don't do hard figures (except the special ones x x).

I do know this though:

I have enough water, oxygen and food to keep me alive long enough to enjoy the ladies, the music, the food and drink and every fun activity I could possibly enjoy. I'd like to think that I don't contribute to the raping of a planet that provides me with it all. Unfortunately I'm wrong and I can't see a way to stop.

I blame the leffe, it has a strange melancholy effect on my brain.
