How do,

So my main Windows drive got a click of death and refuses to boot. It's actually been making noises for about a week but of course I didn't back up because I figured.. uh, I'd do it tomorrow :(.

Anyway, I'm looking at DR companies and that's going to be roughly £300. Anyone know of any other solutions bar shoving it in the freezer?

TIA!

Hah, porn is on another drive so that's safe. It's boring stuff like emails and accounts files :(.

Don't temper with it yourselves if it is a physical problem, you will lack the required tools and spare-parts, clean-room etc etc. Take the lesson learned, pay up and make backups in the future.

If it's 'only' a logical problem, immediately clone the drive to 2 other drives so you can temper around on one of the backups and if you screw up use the other backup to get the temper-drive back in the 'original' state.

There are software-tools around for it, but seeing you write about 'click of death' and stuff it sounds like a physical problem with the drive and my advice is: Don't screw around with it and bring it to a specialist.

Yeah I figured that was the case.

I just found a backup from 3 months ago, so the question is - is 3 months data worth 300 quid :S.
