Classical Music

How many here are into classical music? As I get older (sigh) I find myself becoming more and more beguiled by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Strauss, etc.

My neighbours must think I'm weird but it must be nicer for them to hear Mozart's Requiem Mass than 50 minutes of Muse.

Right now I think my favourite piece is Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Minor (op 61). The Allegro part is just beautiful, and makes me badly want to be able to play a Violin.

Its 25 minutes long but utterly beautiful.

I've never been a huge fan of mozart or beefoven (although I do like some of their stuff) but classical music FTW tbfh.

I listen to all sorts but every now and again I go through a phase of listening to nothing but classical.

Apparently, if you play classical music to kids in the womb they turn out more intelligent. Doesn't happen with "pop" music.

Classical music's more challenging. Harder to get in to but like most things you have to put effort into you get a lot back. And the piano's the king of instruments btw

Not particularly into classical music but quite some modern strings stuff such as Pachbels canon, Adagio for Strings, Holst's Planet suite (not even sure if thats the right phrase for a collection of music). I like other bits n bob's too Tchaicovsky's Montagues n Capulets (and over course the one with Canons 1812 overture) oh and Nimrod was that by Elgar, too lazy too google it. Sorry I can't suggest anything that everyone hasn't heard on a million adverts before but I like them

I love Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No 5 but normally I'm into something a bit more modern and atonal like Schoenberg.

Classic FM style 'smooth classics' or 'music to relax to' or 'those tunes from the adverts' makes me want to vomit. Radio 3 is where it's at.

Yeh but Classic FM's music from the Movies is just awesome! I love hearing the Jurrasic Park theme song for the 14 millionth time :/

Not *classic* classical music, but I like it.. some of the songs are really uplifting.

Not normally into classical music, but my tastes are pretty varied and I find it good to listen to sometimes.

My favourite part of the Christmas break is New Years Day, when I get to watch the concert from Vienna on the TV. Tons of Austrian bias (obviously) and no chance of not hearing Blue Danube, but it's always brilliant. If only I could afford to go.

Heh, same here... I can even play it on Piano. When I was younger and still being dragged to church by the 'rents, our Priest let me have a bash on the church organ, sounds so damn nice on organ.

Not massively into Classical, find most of it scratchy and tuneless to be honest with, and most of it sorely needs some kind of beat. However there are a few pieces I love. They are

Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez - clearly one of the most beautiful pieces of all time, conjures up images of the Wild West for some reason. Love it.

Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King - fantastic

Beethoven's 9th, 4th Movement - DIE HARD!!!!!

Mozart's 40th - commercial I know, brilliant tune tho.

Holst - The Planets - Mars and Jupiter are my faves, couple of others are highly listenable too.

Strauss - Also Spracht Zarahuistra

Gladiator OST - yes it counts dammit.

However, if you combine classical with dance music, as Rob Dougan and Hybrid do, I am sold. Hybrid's Finished Symphony is THE greatest piece of music ever.

I've always been able to appreciate classical music as it is where I can most relate modern trance music to. Not modern, modern trance - these days it's all crap, but the heydey (late 90's) - many even used parts of were remakes of some very good classical peices. Barber's Adagio for Strings (as previously mentioned) was probably the first one that got me thinking about it more - it prompted me to buy William Orbit's album (peices in a modern style) and then started looking for the originals/remakes of.

At least it's easier to appreciate the music as it came then, than what we have pumped out of Radio 1 of late - every other track played has beeps for censored language or involves some form of nasty/gang vibes.

Saying that, I've become rather attached to Robyn - With Every Heartbeat in the last couple of weeks - even more so with her live lounge appearance on Radio 1, singing it over a piano. Absolutely stunning stuff.

Oh and lastly I'd like to concur with Bodhi regarding Finished Symphony and much of Rob D's stuff. Fantastic, and I've got all of them queued up for playtime currently - not heard them for a while.
