Has anybody played this?

There's a sale on at steam and i'm feeling a little strategy! Is it any good?

If not, somebody recommend me a strategy game!

I play it. V is somewhat different to the others. Not entirely sure that's a good thing yet.

If you're feeling for some Civ, get 4. 5 is a broken piece of shit and is beyond fixable, which is a shame because it did have some good things.

I didn't like 5 at all.

4 is excellent though :)

For starters, the AI is terrible. It doesn't understand the combat mechanics at all, which is a shame because it could have changed Civ for the better if it worked.

The AI is also incapable of actually engaging in any long-term strategy, other than randomly flailing around hoping to score a conquest victory - which is extremely unlikely because of how badly it uses its units, especially naval units - it can't do anything with them at all except sail around the globe exploring.

Next up is actual game balance, the majority of the buildings are useless. Units are extremely unbalanced, specialist economies have been almost entirely killed off, there is no reason whatsoever to build anything except commerce buildings, maritime states are still utterly broken despite several nerfs in patches etc.

Other balance issues are the fact that some civilizations are just utterly useless, while others are gamebreaking.

Social policies was also a terrible idea, it didn't offer more interesting gameplay, it offered exactly the same gameplay since there is very little reason to stray from the standard set out policies.

There's also a few seriously odd design choices, for example the entire game is built to discourage city spamming, which is decidedly odd in a game about expanding an empire. It seems kind of counter-intuitive.

edit: forgot the worst part, the "enhanced, realistic" diplomacy. It's an utter fucking joke, it's worse than total war's diplomacy which is saying something.

all true, Helme, and I'd like to add that it seems to crash randomly and misbehave on my pc. for example, I was kicking the shit out of Alexander earlier today, and then saved/quit to do some other stuffs, only to have the game crash just as I was quitting. just now I wanted to resume my destruction of Greece only to find that there was no recent save to be had ffs.

very demotivating to have to go through about 40 turns of war again, so I literally said "meh" and quit :-/

The sad part is that it could have been a good game, you can see it here and there when playing it but the bad just so far outweighs the good. If Civ4 didn't exist maybe there would be an argument for playing it but since we have what is pretty much 4x perfection there's not much point.

And it's slooooooooooow.

It's a fucking turn-based game which isn't that complex and the processor isn't being asked to do enough maths to power the graphics card with 60+ frames of multi-processed polygons.

Yet it fucking crawls. Even when redrawing the screen sometime. :(

Civ 4 is £3.75 on steam atm, though that doesn't include any expansions, which range from £2.99 to £3.75 each.

Total for the whole package £14.24

Civ 5 is £17.99 and £6.99 for all the expansions.

Let's not call them expansions, because that's an insult to actual expansions.

Yeah, DLC really :)

Think I got mine for a lot less in a steam sale.

I got Civ5 last year and really enjoyed it as I had only played the board-game previously, it's a really pretty game
BUT
After a patch the game developed issues, lots of em. A city state invites you to build a road from your capital to them and will never acknowledge it has been finished. If you use a big map then the game will probably crash around the industrial era, can't remember the turn but it's well documented in the forums Civilization V Support
In one small game I met the one AI opponent and in the next move he denounced me - the diplomacy is totally illogical at times.

I routinely buy every new release of Civ without really thinking about it - I've been addicted for years, and I hadn't come across a bad version on any platform until Civ5. I was shocked at just how unplayable it becomes after a couple of hours of gameplay - I can only assume that Sid was working on bigger and better things while this was developed.

I have to say though, it is unusual for Sid to release a game that is this bad. He has generally created very solid games, all the way back to his Microprose days. I suppose that is why Civ5 annoyed me so much.

I think I might go ahead and get Civ4 tbh!

Sounds like the better bet overall, and its cheaper!

It is imho.

Civ5 isnt too bad and both have good and bad things. I do hate it that they threw away religion, espionage and cooperations in Civ5. No doubt only to throw it in with some DLC month's later.

Tbh, if it works better as a game, Civ 4 is cheaper too, i'll take that!

It's just as a time killer really! Want something a bit interesting to play.

Failing that, i might finally get onto the Starcraft 2 bandwagon!

To start:

Civ 4 - set to Monarch - play with Togugawa(sp?) of Japan.

After that go higher.

Always fun.
