Been playing Civ4 again recently and was thinking of buying the addons (Warlords and Beyond the sword). I've got the original Civ4 on disk - can I buy the addons on steam? Or would that only work if I have the original game on steam too?

Have you tried adding civ4 to steam, via the activate non-steam game button?

How much is it for the discs though? Steam have done quite a few weekend deals on the civ packages, might be worth holding out for one of them.

they deal in euro now so it will never be cheap, even if they do those weekend deals.

Direct2Drive: Buy Civilization 4 Complete Bundle Download sells the complete bundle for 59.99 USD, wich is bound to be ALOT cheeper then what steam charge. (49.99 euro)

only available in UK on this side of the pond tho.

Well no, ctuchik, it is £27.99 on Steam for the complete pack in the UK. We do not deal in nasty Euros. Also £27.99 is about 31 euros. $60 dollars is 46 euros. So you are trying to make him spend more.....

I picked up the full game +expansions for less than £20 on steam in their Christmas sale. Obviously no help to you now but they may well have it on sale again soon in one of their weekend deals.

I don't think you can handle a game where you have to think :(

Ontopic! What is the point of civilization addons ? I never played them since I mostly enjoy playing random games. Can anyone explain what the expansions brings!? :)

Hoi! .... shut up!

Due to some refurb work going on at work most of my shift has been moved to another site, cept for 1 person who needs to stay for DR purposes. Since i stay local, I volunteered.
Night shifts get a bit quiet so I take the laptop in - cant really play anything too involved in case something kicks off, but turn based games are perfect :)

Anyone recommend any other good TBS games? I've got GalCiv II complete package already

As you already know, i am a scum :)

I feel liked playing civ4 again, is it worth warezing the expansions if i have no interest in the scenarios? Or should i just get civ4? :)

Yes, but lovable scum

If you like that style of game, Civ4 is the best in the genre (imo). I prefer the freeform normal game to scenarios though

I just won my first game on Warlord :)
I had a couple of hard games which i won on points (I don't count those!) but now i dominated 2 in a row. It got a lot easier when i read up on the benefits of certain Civics, I didn't understand what the +1 bla bla for Town meant but when i found out what a town was my civ got such a boost :) Last game i had 5100 points and the second guy had 2300. Al tho i had a ridiculous lucky start in getting 2 settlers at native villages :) Next I'll try a cultural victory on Warlord before moving on to next difficulty! :)

I like Civ 4 but I've decided I suck too much at it - I struggle to win on noble most of the time. Depends what map you play I guess, I like Terra cos could can exploit the fact you know theres an empty continent to find.

Been playing as Pericles of late, I like creative plus you get library/university/odeon at half build speed. Only drawback is their unique unit is a little too early game for when I usually have my wars

I like Elizabeth and Catherine (the russian). Both have financial which I love and Elizabeth has more Great People and Catarina has more cultural. Atm I prefer Catherine cause i suck at using Great People :p

I play Fractal or Continent mostly, i tried Terra map but you really get to big a advantage if you rush to the other continent imo :p

It's good fun trying to win in the various ways tho (and not only conquest as I did before :p )

I suck at getting great people early game, never manage to get any wonders and usually only have 1 specialist at most. I like great scientists to rush key techs and engineers to get some wonders out.

Also great merchants are <3

The "pro's" usually seem to have Great People Factories :) Just towns with nothing but farms and as much food as possible. I will try that next time to see how much GP I can get out :) With the Scientist i usually build Academies in my 2-3 best citys and use rest for techs. Engineers i always save for wonders. Merchants are so so imo, i usually have a rather good economy but when the economy falters it's nice to have :)

I wonder if I should bother DLing the expansions or keep playing standard for a while longer :)

edit: If you look at this screenshot

You know what button to push to get the "playing" field to display how much food etc each tile gives?

It's one of the buttons above the mini-map, with the food/coin/hammer icons in it - or ctrl+y

Grattis :)

I had a decent game last week, on a 2 continents map I was at war from Knights continually through to Modern armour subjagating the 4 other factions on my continent (had a unit with 72xp lol, level 7).

Didnt fancy landed on the the other continent with 2 entrenched and allied civs who were only slightly behind me tech wise. Built the UN and "cheated" with a diplomatic win :p

I won my second Noble game with a space race victory. I think i have to try a slower time game (what time do you play?) to be able to win with domination/conquest. I'm not warmongering enough and when i do i fall behind in tech :p

But thats for tomorrow! :)

Ok, as I said I've only played Normal so far. And I'm not even done making my third city by 1 AD pretty much :p (can't remember exactly but I always build citys faster than the comp at least!) It's hard to have time to war then :p

So whats your verdict, is it worth to get the expansions or don't they offer anything new?

I like them, with the exception of the addition of Vassal states. Having an enemy you're about to crush turn round and become a vassal to the biggest AI Civ who then declares war on you is lame. Can just play a custom game with them turned off though

They nerfed chopping though which makes starting a bit slower. Ie found your city and grow to size 2 while building a warrior. At size 2 get out a worker asap who then chops trees to rush produce a settler. Still works, just not as effective.

Just to add, Pericles is deffo my fav leader in single player - the combination of traits and the fact you get double speed Library, University and Odeon is awesome
