Circle round the moon?

Looking at the moon tonight I saw a circle of light around the moon (some distance away - best described if you look at a cd or dvd - the inner circle would be the moon and the outer edge would be about the right place for the circle).

Any ideas? I've seen pink moons etc from air pollution but this ones new to me...

I saw that a few weeks ago, probably best described as a halo. About 3/4 times the diameter of the moon.

ohhh uber linkage :) beat me to it, yea was going to say its got something to do with the clouds :D Think ECA's explanation is the best though :p

I've seen sundogs a few times when cycling, and looked them up. I was pretty sure this was something similar. :)
