Before the health-nuts start in, it is my choice to smoke. Yes, it isnt healthy and no, its not good for me, but its my choice and I enjoy it.

So onto the matter at hand. Having been a hookah smoker for the last 6 years (haha hooker), I recently enjoyed a foray into the world of cigars.

And by gum are they good. Theres nothing better than sitting around in a cafe (oh how I will miss that in the UK) chatting to people and enjoying a cigar to help while away the time.

Now as I live in Qatar, for some reason there is an abundance of cuban cigars. I've gone through a few Romeo y Juliata's, they're about 4 quid for a No.2, and they're gorgeous, but I'm not sure what else to try. Its quite wierd going into the shop and stammering, so I thought I'd ask other people here for their advice.

Any reccomendations?

My missus's father is a cigar lover, so I shall be consulting him soon, but I remember seeing a few conversations around here about it so I thought I'd ask away.

I believe ch3t is most likely the expert for this!

Besides that, hookahs are fucking awesome.

Arent they? Fucking pissed they were included as part of the "smoking ban".

Agree that its smoking in a "public" space, but its like banning alcohol from public spaces, including pubs.

The whole point of a sheesha cafe was to go to smoke. Now it's going to have to be done all at home.

I feel persecuted for my personal habits, which dont intrude onto other people.

It was done with minimal consultation, and as a blanket ban. Thanks again nanny state!

I'll be honest with you, it would be smashed to smithereens. Thats why I always try and avoid ordering them over the net, had a bad experience when I broke the glass base and ordered a new one.

Came in a box, in 30 pieces.

You're better off looking around the nearest major city where you live for a shop that specialises in them, sometimes if you're lucky a tobacconist will have them.

But feel free to buy tobacco online, I'm loving cappaccino flavour at the moment. Coconut is rather nice as well.

Get one with a large glass bottom.

Will, be mindful that these things are high maintenance, you MUST clean it every time you use it and regulary blow as hard as poss down the hose itself.

If you're not careful you'll suck through a load of dried tar and shit which isnt very nice.

Other than that, hookahs are fucking brilliant, esp with some of the old wacky baccy. ;)

Well, I'm in a major city here. There is a middle eastern shop in town, but the selection is rather poor. I hadn't thought of trying tobacconist, I'll have a trawl on Sunday.

Sharma, I'm well experienced in non-tobacco smoking. Just not sheesha. :)

Hi Munkey,

I have a good sized humidor full of cuban cigars at work (we retail the no.2s at about £9). Personally I tend to smoke Upmann Juniors as they're nice and small (and inexpensive) but if I'm pushing the boat out I go for a Cohiba Siglo II or even a Robusto if I feel I have the stamina! I find their tobacco the nicest. The most popular among the 4 a day crowd in my part of the world are the Montecristo No.4s and the Cohiba Siglo IIs.

Totally agree with that.

Dont put water down the hose, thats the most impotant bit, or the two spouts on each side of the stem. Just run lots and lots of water down the main stem, and blast the inside of the base with a tap on high. Works for me.

You can get special brushes and stuff for it, but tbh, as long as you use luke-warm water (lots of it, preferably at a high velocity) you'll be fine.

On the subject of coal: Quick-light coal is ok, but it leaves a ton of shit in the stem, base and consequently (i'm guessing) your lungs. Try and get some normal charcoal, or the charcoal used for middle-eastern incense (the oriental shops might have some). If you can find it, Magic Coal is the bee's knees. And tbh, its not that hard to light, just get a dish that you can carry the charcoal on and use a stove to light it and transfer it to the pipe. Bit more legwork, but well worth the smoke.

Also 2-3 coal on top is the most you'll be wanting. Anymore and you'll be burning the tobacco (you'll be able to see smoke coming out the top - big sign to take off some coal) and anyless and you'll just be sucking air.

I'd say go to a sheesha cafe just to see what they do, plus its a great experience, but...well...nanny state and all that.

Ben.

Just the sort of thing I was looking for. I dont think im going to splash out for a humidor just yet, one day i hope. But I'll keep an eye out for those brands.

I'd say just the one of those magic charcoal pellets is enough, just seat it in the middle and off you go.

Also Will;

Make sure you keep the tobacco:

A: Sealed at all times when not using it
B: In the fridge

Also depending on the strength of your lungs, you may want to get a short hose to start with to get used to it, don't really pull either, just breathe in. :)

And if you fancy getting a bit fancy, you can get these little domes that go over the dish that insulate all the heat which works wonders for smoking it outside.

As for flavours when starting to get a feel for it, i'd try Apple, banana or strawberry. They taste like Opal Fruits btw. :D

Any other info I guess you can just prod me or munkey!

Yeah, go for Cohibas. I was in Cuba a couple of weeks ago and the locals recommended them over the Romeo y Julietas I occasionally smoke. They were right too. Biggest problem with cigars is having the uninterrupted time to smoke one.

Cohiba Robustos are quite cheap too. If you like Romeo's, try a churchill. Glorious smoke.

Cigars cost a fortune over here, even if you do know a tabacconist who will give you a good price. Buy a good supply and a humidor to bring back with you.

My brother in law smokes, so do most of my cousins. It's nice when we are all out and the weather is good, sit around a table and pass around a nice cigar. Going to be hard to do it when it starts getting cold and even wetter again though :/
