Yep its official they want to downgrade christmas. Must be true too .. its in the t'interwebby

Christmas should be downgraded unless other religious festivals are marked on an even footing, a Government think-tank has said.

The Institute of Public Policy Research has suggested various ideas to make the UK more multicultural.

It also wants "national culture" barriers to be torn down to help immigrants settle into the UK.

In a report due to be published in coming weeks, the organisation said: "If we are going to continue to mark Christmas - and it would be very hard to expunge it from our national life even if we wanted to - then public organisations should mark other major religious festivals too.

"Even-handedness dictates that we provide public recognition to minority cultures and traditions."

It emerged in 2006 that three out of four employers were not putting up Christmas decorations in the workplace for fear of offending staff of other cultures.

Call me crazy but i think the people that decide on these rules are not actually the ones that may be offended by any of their own rulings? I dont know of anyone thats is actually offended by the fact that people do celebrate Christmas.

Its like I would not expect Saudi Arabia to "downgrade" Hajj incase someone might be offended.

Teh PC world has gone crazy. ( as if it hadnt already)

It a load of shit to put it frank. If i go to another country i wouldnt expect them to stop promoting their main religions holiday, just like I dont expect my country to change their ways. This is a predominant christian country therefore they are the main holidays. It bad enough that Government organisations are taking out public holidays and staying open on basically all but christmas and new year as is.

More to the point, you often find that more people take offence to the fact that the change is being pinned on their religion then those that take offence to a country enjoying its national holidays.

Wonder if this is the same think tank that a few years back said Marmite is a good way to help stop fighting (in the middle east i think was their focus)

You can't celebrate Christmas becuase it might offend some Muslim people. Sorry.

In fact you can't even breathe, because somewhere someone will get offended.

It's lines like this that really piss me off.

If they want to immigrate here then they can accept our way of life. If they don't like it then let them stay in their own country, or find one they do like.
I don't walk into my neighbours house and complain that their wallpaper is offensive to me, then actually expect them to change it.

Christmas for many people stopped being anything to do with religion quite a long time ago anyway!

My mate was telling me how the Muslims working at his Superdrug store got 2 hours lunch instead of one like everyone else because they claimed fatigue during their Ramadan. If we are nice enough as a country to do things like that - why can't they support our Christmas events?

The sad thing is I know a couple of Muslims and none of them think in this way. Yet the Muslims will get the blame when it's those fucking PC-bastards that are spurring up more hatred than they'd like to think.

i dont see why this is a problem or an issue, and why you'd want to downgrade anything, or be mad at muslims or any other culture or religion,

For me it all very much look like a case of "falls aproach"

If you within a country have a growing minority "of a substantial size " and the a new "need" emerges from it, like f.exp Islam in Europe, then why not adopt "in this case" the major islamic holiday into the calender ? I see no reason what so ever to down grade the major majority holiday, that just seems a rediculouse thought.

this sugestion only fuels confrontation imo, where as an adoption policy would work towards coexistence, introducng one doent deminish the other.

as for work/school days ect ? well.. you dont need to make it a bank holiday or ?
sure some form of comprimise could be reached without much trouble, Here in DK Muslims have the right to take "islamic holidays off" without the country going to a hult!

Actually i've changed my mind.
We really should downgrade Christmas!

Not because it offends some random immigrants, but because starting christmas in the middle of September now actually offends even me. Lets downgrade it back to being something that's part of December, not the last half of the year!

it got out of hand about 4yrs ago when christmas actually kicked off in woolworths I think it was at the end of july- attempt to get ahead of sales etc

press took piss out of 'em and now its back to the usual mid october rush- nothing wrong with that imo, 2.5months to get everything sorted, tis the biggest event of the year etc

If we don't take in immigrants, our economy will eventually collapse. Thus, we do have to adapt to a multi-culture society - we just need to lay off the PC a bit.

Things aren't as rosy as 'the UK can survive on it's own.' We can't.

Alot of anger in this one. You do realise that these proposals are made by english politicians that are scared to offend ethnic minorities with the english 'culture', right? I think most immigrants are fine with and also enjoy christmas themselves.

Oh and what Bugz said.

Where's that story come from? Think half these scare stories about christmas being downgrade etc come from the far right, or at least blow out of all proportion.

Anyhow I can think of a simple soltion to putting all religions on equal footing, legally, and that's give none of them any legal reckonition altogether. It's taken hunderds of years to get the religion cracks out of goverment - mostly by shipping em to the US - and they can stay out.

I fail to see what "this is britain" and "our country" has to do with christmas.
Country != Religion and we´re talking about religion here. I think it´s safe to assume that there are a fooking LOT of people in the UK who´re not christians (muslims, hindu whatever) and who are paying their taxes and accept the "score". Of course, you can claim that there is some form of traditional connection between the country and the church. But then again, the discussion is about christmas, not erasing the word "god" from the anthem.

HOW EVER!
It´s bloody ridiculous to downgrade (whatever that means) a feast like christmas for pseudo-integrational (does that word exist? you get the idea :)) reasons. Chrisitans have a right to celebrate what they want and without giving a damn about other religions. It´s their religion and nobody has a right to tell them what and how to do. I doubt that anyone is offended by muslims celebrating ramadan in the UK.

ramadan isnt exactly a bank holiday tho'
I think what the "think tank" is sugesting is too "downgrade" from that,
but tbh thats still silly and the liberal market is already doing that all by it self.
