It's not BTs fault that DSL has physical limitations on cable length. Nothing BT can do will increase the max distance of aDSL above 5.4km (for 1.5mbit max) so that's the consequence of living in the sticks

Heh :D Don't get me wrong, curse them! Chase them about wiv a big farkin stick! But if you live in the sticks you would never get DSL anwyay :) BT wouldn't, and shouldn't build an exchange right next to your house cos you decide to be antisocial and live int he shits...er, sticks :p

I live in a residential area. Here's a map of my street. I've marked where I live.

====================================

...............................I live here

Two houses near me have ADSL. I can't get it. Nor can I get cable. Nobody will listen; Telewest, BT and Cable & Wireless all told my to piss off. Kind of.

Why is that?

Hmm?

Winmodems = shite, that's your problem. If you want to avoid a Winmodem, get an external, simple really. I'd suggest the Diamond Supra (actually tbh I'd suggest getting broadband :) )

Well re: ADSL - how near are these other houses? If they are very close, you've probably failed on line quality rather than the distance from the exchange. Do you live in a new house by any chance? Ironically you actually have a better chance of getting DSL in an old house, as you will have a proper copper phone line, rather than a shitty aluminium one like they seem to be installing nowadays. A drastic solution would be to get BT to install you a new (copper) phone line, and get that converted...

As for cable, maybe you should check if you are actually in a catchment area for TW/NTL first? Generally if you're in a TW area you'll be able to get Blueyonder, if you're in an NTL area you should be able to get NTLWorld (unless you're ex-C&W, in which case your exchange probably hasn't been upgraded yet), and if you're neither you'll have to have ADSL.

You're a very clever man. I'm outside the catchment are of both Telewest and NTL, yet it seems the next postcode along can use Telewest cable.

BT want a lo-h-ot of money to get me using anything another than a standard phone line.

I'm slow but I'm happy. For now.

Thanks m8!
