Choppy Gameplay Online Query

I have recently changed modems as my old one appeared to die, when I played games like Counterstrike I got pings of around 300 but the gameplay onscreen appeared as perfectly smooth as offline. I know there was lag but I couldnt see it and so I didnt care basically.

Now woith my new modem though I get extremley choppy gameplay online, I get lag on movement and shooting with my characters seemingly teleporting through time and space making walking through doors a nightmare!

I think my new modem is a soft modem and my old one was a hard modem, would this explain the choppy-ness? If so would getting hardware modem solve the problem?

It most definitely sounds like you've bought a Winmodem (software modem)

Yeah its Nick naysmith, and he said Catherine hepburn not Audrey Hepburn......have been meaning to change it before anyone noticed.......d'oh.....

Oh and yeah if I get rid of my Winmodem and get a hardware modem will I be able to get smooth gameplay? Thats kinda the key thing, I dont care about lag cos I know I cant escape that unless I get a ridiculously expensive ASDL line or something, I know I aint gonna kick ass with big lag, I just wanna play for a laugh. Its no fun when its jumping all over the place.

Basically a winmodem is a 'lazy' modem. It's a cutdown modem, that transfers alot of the calculations etc to your CPU instead of doing itself via windows drivers (Hence WinModems). These modems require CPU power to work.

They emd up being cheaper but the drawback is that unless you are on a blazing fast CPU, you will

a) notice slowdown in games because your CPu is having to do all the work for your modem and
b) connection slowdown because your CPU is slaving away running the game you want to play.

A hardware modem does everything it needs for itself, and does not rely on your PC/Windows to do all the hard work for it.

Well I have an Athlon 900 which I rate as pretty quick cos I only just had it installed.......but I guess anykind of communication that has to take place between modem and CPU is gonna slow things down

I got rid of UT because it runs like a tortoise with no legs on a Geforce 2 card (I recently upgraded from a Voodoo 5500, worth it just for giants - best game for ages)

Giants is a good game, but howw the hell could you get rid of UT? HEY?? A spoiler in the ranks. Ewoks, get him!

Hmmmmm UT was good, far far better than Quake 3.....it was just unplayable on a Geforce. Unreal 2 is supposed to be out this year which I think is rather hopeful. Undying is good too if you FPSs...

sry, but Undying was soul-less and pants, if u ask me. man, it wasn't even scary, its 'meant to be' strong point. It was just plain boring and too easy...

'Cept US Robotics don't exist anymore (bought by 3Com) and they're a classic example of a WinModem ie. software.

You wanna v.90/K56 Connexant HCF PCI hardware modem. 'At's what you want.

Just get and modem from ur local PC store which is not a winmodem, which says 56K boldly on the front and supports V.90, and if better, V.92.

Oh, and when will ISP's start supporting V.92 modems as I have one:confused:

It's often difficult to spot a winmodem, as some manufacturers don't advertise it as such. One giveaway is a section in the specs that says 'Minimum requirements pentium xxx' (I spotted this just as I was about to pay for a pc-card modem). Hardware modems don't have any such specs, except perhaps for the bundled software.

kinda used to the peace and serenity of the country....... until I start playing CS.

Moving is a kind of expensive way of getting a better connect.

I'll speak to the wife and see what she says. I'm sure she will agree once I explain how important it is - NOT

Be a bit like :
