i doubt every noob and his dog run these kind of operating systems at home, and i further more doubt that every noob and his dog runs hubbed (not switched) lans at home and has knowlegde on how to setup this kind of packet sniffer for daoc.

If you run of those listed OS'es as part of a network, then you probably know how to set it up.

If I could be arsed, I would set it up on my Red Hat machine. But since my pc's aren't in the same room, and my account is at risk, the hassle isn't really worth it.

Odin's Eye for EQ (or whatever it was called), was originally only available to Linux users. Some clever monky made it available to people running MS operating systems.

Hmm, I know of a couple of people, stealthers, who use the scanning cheat.

Thier "reason" is that they need it because of the amout of people with buff bots...

Interesting logic.

I guess some people just get a kick out of feeling "uber" because they know when someone is coming well in advance and can get the jump on them.

People who use the scanning cheat, buffbots and whatever other advantage giving means dont bother me in the slightest, they are spoiling the game for themselves I think.

The only thing that does piss me off is spies on relic raids.

But, I'm enjoying xping again so it will be a while before I'm involved in RvR or a RR again

I suggest reporting suspicious players. I did that a few times myself. GOA/Mythic has ways to prove if someone uses a radar or not but they just cant test all 2000 players on a server. They need hints on wich players to check....

When I am camouflaged, having 40 stealth and standing close to clipping distance to a maingate and I see an Infi at the maingate going into stealth mode only to get PA'd by the same Infi 30 seconds later then it's defenitly time to report another possible cheater.

only thing about groups finding your groups is stealthers scouting.. i often tell other groups number/classes of albs/mids and where they are for example what side of an mg and which battlement sides any inside the mg etc so not necessarily cheating but anyone who uses a radar program is pathetic imho if mythic wanted you to know where everyone was itd be an in game function

Ive killed a buffbot alb who was standing in a tree in Odins before. I was taking a side route because i didnt want to run along the paths because i was meeting people to group with at the amg in Odins. I was running along the zone wall and all of a sudden there were red letters sticking out of this tree. I clicked on the letters, ran up to the tree and kill it. It even had a silly name too like buffbot or somthing. So this story goes.... Maybe the person who killed your shammy just happened to run past and by coincidence saw the name that hibbies see instead of its real name. Like Dwarf eldin verra or whatever the names are. If i had seen the alb guys real name it might have been small enough to be hidden by the tree.

I once met some mid (won't mention name) when I was out admiring the beautiful wildlife in Emain,looking at the trees and played fetch with the rage wolves.
Then all of a sudden some brutal warrior comes and run into my sword!
I defended myself but then he hit me (later I found out he hit me with his shield???) and I couldn't move!!
What kinda lame cheat is that?!??!

A while back in Camlann I was grouped with someone who seemed to have some sort of radar program - she would say the group's next target "red champion" before we were anywhere near it, and definitely before we could see it - then we'd find it, zerg it and she'd pick the next target - this was in the middle of the wilderness, it was quite freaky how she knew exactly where all these other players were...

Interesting, since it's not possible for those radar programs to spot stealthed players, since Mythic simply doesn't send any info about them through the log-file anymore

Radar programs don't use the log file, they trap the data stream. The one mentioned above uses packet sniffing, however, there's one for Windows that uses DLL injection to sniff the data stream. The first one is undetectable, the second one would be detectable if the client supported it, but it requires some ugly programming work (read: code hack) that Mythic are probably incapable of. Even then it'd be all too easy to get round it. If they control the data stream, there's nothing to stop them preventing any alerts the client sends to the server that the client is cheating anyhow. The key is to stop anything else accessing the data stream and at the end of the day when the data stream ends up travelling to and from Joe Cracker's PC he's got all the time in the world he wants to figure out how to get at it. My point is, cheats will always exist. On a side note, thanks to True Sight and See Hidden, yes, stealther data is sent to the client just not rendered unless the skills are active, GG Mythic

What to do about it then? Well the key's never going to be in stopping the cheat programs work, until the bandwidth and hardware is available for all games to be completely server side with only the screen images sent to the client that aint gonna happen. What can happen is to report ANYONE you suspect of cheating or know is cheating, let Mythic investigate but provide as much info on the situation as they can. Sure Mythic can't stop the cheats, and automatically detect the cheats but if someone is heading to targets out of view to them consistently they will get banned as has and does happen on Mythic's servers in the US.

The way to prevent cheating is to come down hard on it, don't let anyone get away with it and when enough accounts get banned the rest will stop. On top of that, if GOA bans a friend with the claim they're cheating and they say they weren't, don't try and defend them and flame GOA. Yes GOA suck goats balls but they do have procedures as does any company, as with hacking incidents they're all too right that it's YOUR job to secure YOUR account passwords.

Before the paranoid start with the "OMFG YOUR A CHAETER BCOS YOU KNOW STFF ABOUT IT!!111". Perhaps it's more because I've spent years studying cheats in online gaming and ways to counter it, since the Quake1 days and primarily since the fateful day Carmack released the Quake1 source to ruin the game for thousands

well i have been pulled out of stealth by an alb tank b4...i was hiding near beno road far behind a tree and a pala swerves of road and just ran up to me and poped me out of stealth..even had another mid stealther (sb) pm'ing me saying wtf??? how he find you..I have also had this happen in sauvage b4 u get a kill and when in camo...and i wont even bother with names if some of you are so bunk u need radar i pity the fool...go zerg emain in 5fg if u cant get rps tho imho those are just are worthless ;p.

Errmmmm....thats not a cheat...its a shield style thats called slam,comes with a stunn for a couple of secs

Hmmm , been wondering how my lvl 50 shade was shot by an alb archer from a long distence when my shade was stealthed, and yes my shade has 50 + in stealth . Its hard to measure distence exactly in this game but suffice enough to say i turned and ran straight at archer when first arrow hit , and got hit by 5 more arrows whilst doing so and died . im not bitching about it , just feel sorry for lamers who needs to cheat . Someone said perhaps they had true sight lol , if true sight can see hidden people at that distence , then fuk dettect hidden i want true sight !

Yes it's True Sight, it sees from max viewing distance. You think that's overpowered? Perhaps you should look into See Hidden, it's cheaper and is a permanent effect available to assassins. An assassin whining about True Sight is perhaps one of the most amusing things I've ever seen.

Roflmao, that one cracked me up! If the archer had not been camouflaged you would have seen him like he saw you. He's using a temporary cheat while you get a permanent one way cheaper.

True Sight = See Hidden for 30 seconds on a 30 minute timer

Still 1 question remains: How did he know you were about? You dont just run around using a 30 sec ability wich is on a 30 minute timer because you feel like it. You use it when you are SURE you will have a good chance to detect an assassin. If this happend at a main gate or portal keep there is no reason to be suspicious. If it happend anywhere else you should report him as a possible radar user.

That has happend to me too.
A paly just ran right at me while I was running on a road and slamed me lol.
He didnt even look he just ran up and slamed...
And yes I was stealthed
