Despite the fact that Thailand's under martial law at the moment, lots of bombings and beheadings in the South, on the border with Burma and general political unrest all over the shop - I've decided to go there for New Year with the missus!

I'm aiming to fly out to Bangkok, stay a few nights in a posh hotel and then fuck off backpacking around the country for a couple of weeks. I've heard that Thailand's ideal for that. Never really done it and I'm intending on jacking in the UK at some point in the future for a happier way of life - so a little taster of my forthcoming "epic" journey seems like the fun thing to do.

Anyway. Cheap flights. Where? Who's best etc. etc?

I've been poking around websites and the like but I figured I'd take advantage of yooz lot's experience. Consider it "charitable work" if you must...

Don't worry about any of that shit; I've been in Thailand for the last month and you'd have no idea there'd ever been a military coup; the only difference I can see is that the bars are staying open longer

Flights: The Ashes have fucked up flight availability big style (everyone going over are flying via Bangkok, KL or Singapore) but you might want to take a look at Eva Air, and Gulf Air, who seem to be the most competitive for flights to BKK. Book direct or use ebookers. If you can get to an STA travel, try them as they often have really good deals for SE Asia. Once in Thailand it depends on where you're going, but Air Asia are absolutely dirt cheap, and Bangkok Airways (who have the exclusive routes to Samui and Siem Reap in Cambodia) are a total ripoff. If you use Air Asia online be extremely careful with their website as you ask for one date and it throws up random dates and is generally a bit FUBARed.

If you're more interested in the North than the islands, I'd thoroughly recommend a side trip to Cambodia, and if you do go south Koh Tao for the diving is fucking brilliant.

I'll second eBookers, I've used them before and my old man uses them regularly too.

As for hotel bookings, I've used asiatravel.com several times without a problem. There are some good deals hidden away in there.

Bird got pissed up at her christmas party and broke her foot. 5th Metertarsal (Rooney style). So drunk that she didn't notice for a while, and when she did she still managed to spend the next hour dancing to the spice girls with some fat, leery, 45 year old ex-copper "propping" her up.

Aside from the jealousy issues (I'm that type, never quite sure if I'm unreasonable or just a mug) I'm right fucked off about the loss of my first holiday since September 2005.

But what can I say? She's gonna spend a lot more time in bed and need some severe cheering up!
