Future in-law needs a new unlocked handset to replace an ageing HTC Desire which has started acting weird. Ideally it needs to be ballpark £150, I had originally suggested an S3 mini at £200 but that price was met with a grimace.

Current suggestion is an HTC One V - it'll work much the same as the Desire so no granny training required, plus it's the right price. Uses are texting, Whatsapp, retrieving emails, occasional Skype.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Nexus 4 second hand?

Good shout, but I reckon she's going to want the comfort of being able to return something or some comeback if it has issues 3 months later.

Huawei Ascend G330, £184
Nokia Lumia 520, £140

...or could get another Desire

No front facing camera on the Desire or Lumia, showstopper for Skype. Will look at the Huawei.

Found an S3 mini in white at eBuyer for £185. Given that second hand Desires are about £60 on eBay, that sets the minimum for a replacement. I think she's a bit unrealistic in getting a decent smartphone for mega cheap.

I'd second a 2nd hand Nexus 4. Great little phone. Think google would take a return no?

The Nokia windows phones are incredibly easy to use. The 520 is a bargain and cheaper than Lamp posted. Front camera, the 620 for around 150.

Went for a Galaxy S3 mini in the end. £199 from Tesco online, but my future inlaw had £75 of Tesco vouchers which doubled up to £150 and therefore basically getting it for £50 cash plus Tesco points. Can't really argue with that.

Bit too late now, but the Moto G might be a good budget option. Apparently it'll be around £135 for 8GB, and £159 for 16GB.

Might be a bit of a pain to get unless they've manufactured plenty of them, stock is available soon and for those prices - it might sell out quickly for Christmas.

See my thread. You can get them £30 cheaper from Tesco and unlock for 2 quid off ebay. Awesome phone.

Echoing Moto G, or the next step up, Nexus 5 (or 4 on ebay). All awesome phones and brilliant value for money compared to iShit
