Change of car

If you're going to get a jappo car, save yourself 5k or so and import it. I can recommend a particularly good source if needs be. As an example, you could pick up a 500bhp Skyline R33 GTR for about 15-17k. A 2 y/o Scooby WRX Sti v7 (ie the proper jappo mental version, not the shitty watered down UK version) will set you back about 12-13k.

Any jap übercar (Skyline, Supra, RX-7, etc) is going to cost you an absolute fortune to maintain, run, and insure. Imprezas are a bit more sensible, but still pretty expensive.

The new Civic Type R is a bit crap, tbh. My sister's got one, so I don't slate it too much in front of her, but you'd be much better off getting an Integra Type R. One of them was clearly made to actually be a good car, whereas the other was made to appeal to the boy racer mentality that big alloys must = good car.

If I were in your position I'd probably get something like an Integra Type-R, or possibly a Sylvia (Jap name for a 200SX). Plenty quick, great to drive, but also not ruinous when it comes to insurance/running costs/etc.

Hm, I just actually bothered to read the original post (should probs do that more often :)

A Class Mercs are total sheds. I had to drive one from Leeds to Southport and it was terrible. Shit gearbox, shit handling, shit engine, shit brakes... shit, basically.

Alfa 156s are nice, VERY direct steering. But... electrics :( My dad had one for a couple of years, the electrics must have failed a good 5 or 6 times in that period. He loved it, but would never get another Alfa.

GTOs are pointless. They're totally outclassed by the *proper* ubercars. Obviously you can't get a Supra because you need rear seat/boot space, but getting a "halfway house" like a GTO is a waste of time.

Shame you said you hate BMWs, because if you want a reliable, quality used car, that has rear leg room, a good boot size, and is awesome to drive, I can't think of something that fits the bill better than an M3 Evo.

Its not that I dont like the drive of the BMW, its just I live in N London and 90% of the drug dealers have BMW's so I spent half my driving time being sat at the side of the road being searched and my car being pulled to shreds.

BMW's are a real no go for me the image they have make people sneer at you round here. as they think you are drug-dealing scum.

I'm seriously thinking about keeping my Audi now, as I,ve test driven quite a few cars in the last year and TBH I cant find a better built car that I like.

Sure my heart wants a subaru but my missus/head say no.
I cant trust a skyline, they are not exactly the most reliable cars.
I dont want an alfa for the same reasons, i've heard far too many of those reliability problems associated with the electronics(especially the dashboard).

I'm not interested in little hot-hatches, If I wanted to get a fast car, id get a proper car.

I'm not gonna import a jap car, I've looked into it, and theres not a very reliable way of checking the cars history (I always HPI)

This leaves me with my AUDI sitting at the top of my list (just as it was when I bought it)

Im not gonna get an S3 or an A3 1.8T because they never made them in 5 door.

I want another car, but I cant see a worthy replacement.
Seriously the AUDI A3 is a top car and they hold their money extremely well.
Maybe I'll think again in the spring.

How about a Peugeot 306 GTI-6, or even a Ralleye? They're the same sort of size as your Audi, fairly practical (ie they have rear leg and boot space), similar to the current "uberhatch" breed of cars that is popping up in terms of performance (Civic Type-R etc), are still a better drive than the aforementioned uberhatch, but considerably cheaper to insure, repair and maintain than one. They're very good "Q-Cars" - look very understated and discrete, but are bloody quick. VERY important to test drive one first though, and not just a 5 minute trip round the block - Pugs (like all French cars) have an offset pedal position, which a lot of people can find uncomfortable.

Yeah there is btw, there's an HPI-like check for imported Japanese cars that guarantees the origin - if it turns out to be dodgy, they'll refund the entire value of the car. Can't remember the name of the org (got it bookmarked at home), but any jap car club (eg GTR Club) will be able to tell you. Plus dodgy imports are very rare if you get them from a reputable place

I disagree about the comments on the Civic Type R.

My sis has a 51 plate and there was bags of room for me (6') and my girlfriend (6'1") in the back.

Coupled with decent space for adults (so you can deffo get kids in), a pretty big boot (for carrying the wife's body home once you've murdered her for saying "dear, this is a 30, think of the kids..." .. oh, and the shopping) and pretty speedy performance (0-60 in 6.5) it's a smashing car for around the 15k mark.

I watched something a while ago, Top Gear special I think it was. They estimated that up to 80% of 4WD imports were nicked. They showed several huge compounds in Saudi where they were stored before coming here. Since seeing that and several people getting their cars reposessed I'm staying clear. They tend to get hit hard on insurance too, just because they can I guess (same parts, same car etc).

So I'm a drug dealer huh?.....
In that case I need some bitches.....and some gold......and something carved into my hair style.......:)

I never said anything about the capacity for carrying people.

I just said it was a bit of a shit car compared to the (infinitely better) Integra Type R, and if Honda had spent more time thinking about making a good car than making one that looked good (wasn't that the whole idea of Type R in the first place - the purists sports car?) it might have been better.

On the contrary, the Civic Type R is an excellent people carrier, right up there with the Ford Galaxy in aerodynamic looks and handling :)

All of these are the common myths about importing Japanese cars, and all of them have been thoroughly debunked. I'll supply more info if you want.

Re earlier post: the organisation that guarantees Japanese imports I mentioned earlier in the thread is called BIMTA, who are backed by Lloyds of London to the full value of each and every car they verify.

I never said that you did.

Skyler did on the previous page.

Civic Type-R is not a family car.

It is rather small, I wouldnt want to have it for two kids a wife and shopping

gotta take it easy tho, it handles like it's on rails but have to learn the new limits cos it'll prob let go a bit more brutally!

aye. because I didn't really do anything with it. cars aren't for me. I could only take one other person with me. I really needed a garage for it. It was a bloody expensive toy that served only to fuel my male chauvinist desire to glorify the length of my penis. I am a cunt. People would like me better if I sold it. please kill me now. cars are useless. chicks dig scars. glory is forever. pi r square. I dunno. someone prolly nagged the hell out of me. I was drunk.*

I don't get it... Are you saying that Mazda deserve eternal praise for creating a decent sports car that has a rotary engine, or are you saying that Mazda deserve eternal scorn for creating a crap sports car with a crap engine that never should have left the drawing board? :(
