i actually think premiere is much more userfriendly, but yeah the compression really sucks need a big (or 2nd) hd for the uncompressed file before compressing in virtualdub

And tbh, I gotta try Sony Vegas aswell cause it seems to have a broader database of effects suited for a gaming video.


But, can anyone explain what the difference between DivX and XVid is? I read up on the net and it said XVid is an open source project near to DivX, but where are the strengths / weaknesses of both when comparing them?

ok I just did some tests when encoding the same video 6 times.

I used 1000 - 1500 - 2000 kbps and DivX vs. XVid

First of all the facts. XVid was like half meg. smaller filesize for a 1min19s video, so virtually nothing.

My feeling was, that XVid could handle the chatbox much better, as DivX produces some small orange shadows on the light blue /send.

Quality difference between 1000 and 1500 was good to see, while the difference between 1500 and 2000 was rather minor in my opinion.

Just so far for those who are trying to encode, these are my personal experiences ofc =)

quick test:


450 mb uncompressed daoc fraps clip: I used a 128kbit/s ABR audio track created in lame. movie bitrate :1600 kbit/sec.

MY PC>2400 mhz and 64 1024 mb Ram

Codec Speed
DivX5 31.17 fps (1 min and 19 sec)
XviD 37.31 fps (1 min and 6 sec)

Turn up the brightness while watching these 2 clips and see how meny pixel error divx has

thanks to septima I just recoded this in Vegas using Xvid with standard default settings. No compression on sound. Then used Virtual dub to compress sound down.

The vid is now 256 meg. and the quality is 100times better.

Will upload again onto RPG tonight.

do you know if there is any way to get higher resolution recording than 1024*768 with fraps? Cause I kinda hate playing at this crappy resolution with my comp, just so I get nice clips. The alternative would be to play in 2048*1532 and I do NOT think that my computer can handle this atm =)) hehe

Finally managed to download it now that its been re-encoded!

Just watching it now, and yey I got my name up in lights!

I knew you'd get that fight on the bridge thought! I didnt want to go 2 on 1, so I backed off, then got the wrong qbar just as you jumped on me after FZ'ing my guildmate hence the whole water-breath-mid-fight thing

Loving the video though! really really nice! well worth the download is there anyone on the server you havent beaten yet?? really well played!

Should add trying to beat you to the list! because tbh, that'd be a heck of an achievement

Hoping to level a ranger when clustering comes out, it will be interesting to watch from the other side, but mainly I'm really going to be trying with my scout to beat ya one of these days
