Right, I know what this is but for the past couple of days it's being using 40+% CPU for no reason I can think of. Short of un/reinstalling norton has anyone seen this before and is it fixable? I don't remember doing anything that could've prompted it to spack out like this, I just came back from work the other day and LiveUpdate had crashed a couple of hours beforehand and whenever I reboot the CPU usage just shoots straight up.

Crappy Norton software at a guess, that's what the google searches indicate as well. Get rid of it and install something decent like AVG or NOD32.

Try that when you've rolled it out across 10,000 desktops :(

Development at Symantec is a tad on the shit side IMHO. Newest versions should fix it... :)

Thanks chaps, I'm now a NOD32 user with 2-5% CPU usage at idle! :)

(and I don't know if it's psychological but it seems to boot up in about half the time it took before as well.)

Callous, did the cpu usage drop if you shutdown Norton? I have Norton also, but it's not my decision. Paranoid mum's 'n all. :)

Nod here...its very good with meme usage...but I have a huge problem on my lappy - it pauses XP boot up until it has checked home for a software/.dat update...as my lappy is often not connected and this takes 2-3 minutes, its a pain in the arse as you cant work while its searching for a network

none of the settings (including ESET support) seem able to fix this for me :(
