I suffered really badly as a child - I find the key to avoiding it is to be able to see the horizon then the brain automatically adjusts to movement.

Bad ideas are sitting in the back or closing your eyes/ trying to read.

The horizon technique kept me fine in 12' swell in a tiny boat on the atlantic so its pretty effective.

I use stemetil too. Mainly for vertigo, but it is prescription only. Bloody train to and from London nearlly got me today. Reckon it was cos the drivers were so useless, nothing like usual, really jerky. Yuk.
