Seems to me you've not read my post nath :)

I drive a Civic Type-R. I get stopped by the rozzers about 3/4 times a year for no reason. Yes it's bad, no they shouldn't, no I'm not changing my car (can't afford to anyway).

So in terms of 4 years, I'm expecting to be pulled over 12-16 times, just for the hell of it. Just because of the car I drive and the fact that plod is a thick motherfucker.

My licence was clean last April. I got pulled out of a chain of cars doing ~80mph on the M1. Pulled out of the middle of a chain at J24 of the M1. "Off to Donnington Park are you?" said plod. "No, Exmouth, to fix the bird's dad's laptop". "Oh? You're not going to the race day?" "No. Why do you say that?" "Type of car."

Three months later I deliberately accelerated through a crossing I knew to have a red light camera. It was either that or get written off by the transit van that was screaching down the hill beind me. I drove straight to the police station to "fess up". They didn't care. I wrote a letter to the authorities explaining the whole situation before the producer came through. I wrote two more. I got 3 points.

Then in February I got caught speeding. No excuses. No foul. My bad. Again, out of the centre of a train of 5, but hey. I should be used to it by now eh?

4 strikes in 3 years isn't unreasonable if you drive a fiesta, nath.

Anyway:
Be realistic, how would a system like that work?

I expect it to work like it does in the states. "You working?" "Yes, m'lud". "Right then, you can drive to work and back. That's it. Get caught by the rozzers and they'll check whether you were working or not".

Seems to work in the States. Why not here? :)

Because if people are not responsible enough to drive, then why should they be responsible when working? Also if you have a job which relies on your ability to drive, then you should not be risking it by driving badly.

Now in your case you may be the unlucky victim of circumstance, but I'd think the majority of those banned probably deserve it. Remember, everyone who speeds thinks they shouldn't have been pulled over.

I'm not complaining of being pulled over there. I'm complaining about the rate that it happens 'cause of my car. 6 out of my 9 points, "hands up" :)

Either way - choice between losing job or continuing to drive, full in the knowledge that the chances are you'll get away with it anyway and there are systems that work just fine in other countries?

I think the law needs looking at :)

Sounds like you've got a bit fucked by the system, but the way you've proposed it seems a bit counter productive.

Say banned drivers are allowed to drive to work. How do you enforce that, how do you know they're driving to work?

If you catch them driving *not* to work, then what? Ban them again, except when driving to work?

Plus, why are you suggesting changing the law about what happens when you get 12 points rather than suggesting the law is improved around getting each 3 points. Change the law for the points you got when you were avoiding an accident for example?

Sorry mate, but it does sound like you're pissed that you're close to a ban and the law needs to change for you in to something that's not adequate.

For a start - this is a system that works in other countries.

I guess the penalties for being caught driving "socially" are extremely harsh. As for checking - I guess that the cops are allowed to check with your employer/check what route you're allowed to take if you work at a single place of work etc.

Remember - I don't administer their systems ffs! :)

All I'm suggesting is that other countries have workable solutions to this problem. Maybe we should too? Nothing more than that...

:)

Whelp, without any more facts as to how it "works" we've only got your word on it and, well, meh.

Additionally, a law working in one country is no guarantee it'll work in another.

Finally, there's no way you can make sure that banned drivers are only driving to work without a massive ballache, or some sophisticated GPS+number plate recognition+live link to records and routes. Sounds a little over the top, strikes me it would make more sense to try and make sure people who get points get them for a good reason.

Well. Look at it this way - speeding ain't the biggest crime in the world!

Splitting a man and his wife up (regardless of how many he's got) for a simple matter of speeding would be a bit on the harsh side. We don't do it for burglars and even muggers don't always go to prison. So to do so for a bit of speeding would be nonsense.

Was listening to radio 5 on my way in this morning - they were on about whether we should attach more of a "stigma" to teenage pregnancies in an effort to reduce them. Make people feel terrible about the idea of having a kid when young and you'll reduce the number of pregnancies as people try that much harder to avoid 'em.

Speeding's the same. We've made it a much MUCH bigger villain than it really is - and people have lost sight of that IMO.

my insurers (direct line) have upped my quote from around £350 for 3rd party to £437. i had a smash last year, while stationary, which was sorted and accepted as the other party's fault, i.e i claimed off them. i have one speeding ticket (sp30) which was 2 years ago and i have 6 years no claims. i'm 23.

been shopping around and the best i could do was £403 from swiftcover, this is bullshit! my premiums were supposed to go down the older i got, not more expensive. so annoying.

Why?

Because I don't think speeding's that big a deal? What particular part of my post do you disagree with?

I disagree with the notion that scousers insure their cars tbh.

You'll need Pendrivelinux to do that. Well worth doing imo.

What's your post code rated at on here?

Post Code ratings for Car Insurance

Well that explains my insurance quotes...

That's really quite stupid. For Northampton it lists NN1 (the centre of town) to NN5 as D. The thing is where I live we are NN4 but its a quiet little village with hardly any crime, I think someone tried to steal a car a few years ago and that's been about it. Most people don't even know the village is there.

Is your village also reasonably affluent?

Not that I'm trying to say that there could be a financial advantage gained by the insurance industry if low-crime, high-cash areas are incorrectly graded or anything......

Not really, an insurer looks at you and goes "hmm, speeds and is involved in accidents - I know what, despite them costing us money we'll make it cheaper for the little fella!"

Your insurance costs are very cheap considering your age and past.
