Did all the underwriters just take a bunch of smack, what the hell is going on here?

I get a renewal quote through the post for my beaten up old granddad-mobile Mondeo, 3rd party F&T for £360. Meh, not bad but I've got 7 years no claims, and only the one speeding ticket almost 5 years ago. I reckons I can do better than that if I shop around, especially given all these ads to "guarantee to beat your renewal quote".

At time of writing, I have checked Direct Line, Esure, Churchill, Swift Cover, Lloyds TSB and have yet to find a single one offer me 3rd party F&T insurance for under a grand. Confused wouldn't even bring up any insurers for me at all, just said they'd like to give me a call. I feel like I've been put on some sort of register! I was finding much better deals when I was 25 and eyeing up a 350z, I found several places offering fully comp for ~600.

What the flippin' eck is going on?

Oh come on, planning the death of all infidels (religious folk) can hardly be classed as terrorism.

Its nuts at the moment, I was lucky my quote was only £20 (£280 last year) more than last year and its still cheaper than anywhere else and thats Full Comp a 2001 Astra with 5yrs No Claims and kept in a garage overnight and company camera watched carpark during the day. One quote was nearly £1500. Been reading recently that its become cheaper to get Fully Comp as Insurance companies know that teenagers are going third party and are getting more money by putting those premiums up higher than Fully comp.

If by infidels you mean scousers then I can only applaude you and wish you the very best of luck!

I'm still paying about £450 on a 1.1i Saxo (I'm 25). Looking at buying a Focus, 1.6 or 1.8 ish and it'll be at least £850 -_-

I did my insurance a few months ago, i think it came in at £600-700 or so, going through the IAM service.

They referred me to Insurance Times - IAM Surety as to why insurance is so high nowadays, and it seems like its getting higher and higher annually now.

Fuel economy on the ford diesels is very good, and performance is no less than the petrols, unless as Wij said, you are getting an ST. But if you are getting an ST, then your insurance will be considerably more than £850.

You'll also pay less road tax.

Our insurance broker explained it to me very roughly: Insurance companies can no longer rely on investing your money and getting sufficient returns to make a profit and defray the costs of paying out, therefore they need cash, therefore premiums are going up across the board.

Ah, figured it'd be something like that. I guess I should be glad my renewal quote is still quite low.

£440 for a Y reg 1.8l Picasso, 1yr NCB, 19yrs driving.
Low NCB because work messed up informing the insurers about my 5 years driving for them.

Unless he's doing more than 20,000 a year buying a diesel will be a waste of money.

I pay about 80 euros a month for complete all risk insurance on my diesel Polo. That's about 65 pounds.

Have you tried these guys?
Cheap Car Insurance Quotes | Low No Claims Bonus | Bell Car Insurance

Car insurance | CIS Insurance now The Co-operative Insurance | Motor insurance

Both of them gave me very reasonable quotes in the past...

Careful on the ultra cheap insurance quotes. Some of them don't cover you for things like driving to and from place of work.
