I can set my pc to recognize the speakers (thru config -> sound and Audiodevices -> volume > speaker settings -> advanced -> 5.1 surround sound ).
The problem begins when I reboot. PC resets it automatically to Stereoheadphones.
Also,I have an audigy card and I'm sure the speakers are connected correctly (have 5.1 has worked before) however the audigy software doesn't allow me to set speakers to 5.1 either. It does notice my subwoofer so have it set to 2.1 now (front speakers work).

Any ideas as to what could be the problem? I thought it might be my rear line-in jack thats busted on card but am not sure of this.

Is it a digital or analogue connection to the speakers?

If the latter, its entirely a software problem.

Cliche, but reinstall windows if all else fails. I did, today, and my computer is now so fast, it typed this before I even read your post.

have an audigy. Seperate jacks for front/rear/subwoofer.
Did a format and works fine again now. Thanks Tom.
