Both Firefox and IE have been hijacked on my PC so that a lot of links (including google) get redirected to various spam/advertising websites. BHO Demon fixed this in the past, but i don't have it backed up.

I've tried adaware and spybot; neither have fixed it, so need to try the above.

I have used the above to destroy all dodgy stuff. It cleared a mate's computer of a very nasty virus that did what yours is doing. Took about 10 re-boots, but it systematically killed every last virus there was.

How is it doing this: something a simple as messing with the windows hosts file? Its in c:\windows\system32\etc or something similar, cant hurt to check.

If the normal URLs for google arent working right you could try some of the more obscure countries variants: www.google.co.ck, www.google.is, or www.google.ae if you prefer hieroglyphics and right-to-left typing

Purchased a copy, seems to be doing a lot more than spybot and adaware could ever do. It found 400 exploits and problems, spybot found none.

Looks like I have a virus (A Trojan that changes DNS stuff to redirect to malicious websites) which Norton Antovirus failed to see / pickup. Pld Nortan's AV!!

Seconded - found loads of stuff repeated attempts with Norton, Adaware, A-squared, spybot and AVG left behind....

I'd just like to express a little caution at Spyware Doctor - they've previously been found to find "fake" (placebo?) infections to make you want to purchase their product - other products won't pick up the same infections as they probably don't even exist.

I'm certainly not saying the software doesn't actually do it's job - it does a fair job of removing known spyware - I just can't trust software that has to con people into buying it. The above accusation is based on previous experience with it - I did a good bit of manual hunting myself - it was accusing a fair few normal system registery entries of being malicious and better still, entirely non existant cookies and registry entries.

On a brighter note, to back up Tris - stop looking at dirty sites you naughty young man!

I just tried using it out of curiosity, and it claimed to have detected 'caishow'. Having looked through various manual-removal guides, it doesn't actually appear to exist (at all, not even slightly) on my system. So, yeah. Lame.

Well, 25 quid or so isn't too much for an all round guard. This has active agents to stop popups and the likes aswell, and I based my comments on the fact that whilst it may claim to remove more than is dangerous, it still cleaned up the dns hijacker on my machine where many of the other 'well known' cleaners failed.... until that point I was annoyed as fuck.

I just think it's a bit of a shit that there isn't a single peice of software to do it all - viral, malware, spyware, worms etc without taking up half your system resources to do it (ala Norton/Symantec) or claiming to do it and not doing much at all (pretty much most protection software on the open market)

For any form of all round protection you seem to need 2 or 3 of each type of program installed. Fine for me - I don't have any such protection software installed at any one time - but I do scan with a couple of said trial tools on a monthly basis just to make sure. But, for normal folks or for people that enjoy a good, "free" porn/pirate site, this is hardly recommendable

Out of sheer curiosity, does anyone know if that would have worked? It used to work at college when the computers there had similar problems.

Doesn't work... the low level ip gets b0rk3d
