Those who are saying that there should be 3 seperate PvP servers are fools, the 2 normal English servers are barely populated, what do you think will happen to the PvP one?
it will have like 200 people playing on it.

I think it's good that they made 1 server for everyone, it's the rule of "english only" that's bad..
If people are so annoyed by other languages just buy a goddamn dictionary and look up the words you want to know!!

Look at the US servers, they have 2 PvP servers, both are 1/3th empty..

Heh - anyone know a good guide to german/french rp slang guide???

Its much harder when the whole game interface is in french or german - having to learn a few easy phrases of French/German to join in guild chat is fine with me.

Played on a french server for a while and have been a member of Broc Legends.

Contrary to what people have said in previous posts they werent unfriendly - didnt care that I didnt speak french - repeated posts in english and tried to teach the english members what the french slang meant.

Plus you dont really need language for a lot of things and emotes are universal

I understand that the french/germans wants to speak their own language, as far as I know, most germans speak poor english. As someone said above, they learn english in school. Well, but how often do they speak it? Or hear it? Of what I have heard/been told, Germans "dubb"? (translate the voices in movies) to their own language. And I guess there are same thing with a few games and such too.

I'm Swedish, I speak/write/understand/read English quite well, and why is that? I'm no language geek... it's just that I've grown up whatching English languaged movies and played English games. I know many of these people who are great in school, who do their homeworks for every subject... I NEVER do any homework, unless it's really necessary. Anyway, the point is, these guys are busy reading all other subjects, and has no real other time to play english games or whatch as much TV as I do. These guys often practise on words and such for the english class. And they suck!!! (not that i like the less mates!) But I don't... I learn when i whatch TV and play games.

So if you don't use your english "knowledge" like every day, you wont ever be good at it.

So I guess it is that way it is in Germany, they don't use english much, they use their own language cos they don't need any other. It's sad i think.

I might be totally wrong about this. But is it that they are all being "selfish" or something?

I accept that they might speak their native language when they meet their friends ingame, but I just don't like when they start talking in Broad Chat, or in guildchat (if rules are only english talking). Because they just flood everything away for me, and I've been crafting in Tir Na Nog for a few hours on Gorre, I try to help all people as much as I can with directions to trainers/merchants/etc. But I can't do that when they just don't speak english.

Fact is, I really like speaking/writing in english, I can speak english even if im in a group full of swedish people. And, sometimes it's irritating to be switching between two languages (i.e groupchat in swedish and /tell's with an english speaking).

If some says one public channel in TNN "Weise irgend jemand wie ich nach Albion kommen?" Give you answer in english if you like or irgnore the question. Most talk one public channel is trash.
And I saw non english talk one public channel in exc. too and not only german.

Seriously though, rumblings in certain quarters do piss me off. While there is an accepted resentment among the French in particular as a nation to converse in English (harking back to the colonial days and the list of defeats above no doubt ), what the fuck makes the British so goddamn righteous that others should speak in their language? It is to my eternal shame as a Brit that I haven't mastered another major language to the degree that others manage mine (fluent Afrikaans and passable Zulu counts for fuck all in Europe I can tell you !!!).

I draw your attention to an extract from CE PvP policy :

its funny to see how many english people complain about some germans who doesn't speak english but can't speak a word in a foreign language...

i know that the main language on the pvp server should be english. its probably the best solution. germans and french peolpe are mostly able to speak english.
if there are some guys speaking in their native language, don't think that they aren't able to speak english!
i am german and i will probably speak sometimes too in german in main chat. sometimes also in french. and sometimes in english.

if someone will kill me cause i'am speaking not always english... well, i'll have something to laugh

And seriously yes, maybe French are a little ressentful about English status as "world wide language" as there was soem dreaming of French being just that before well known colonial demises (Quebec, West Africa, Vietnam and Cambodgia have been French speaking countries since then, though the later are slowly changing to English).

Not that we should care much, the very idea of colonial states is something that had to go anyway.

When he says that, he shows everyone that he knows the rules, but can't follow them to a maximum, so he does his best...

As long as they don't use their chat to flood the main channels, if they ask a question in german, and someone answers, sure it is okey for me.

But when it comes to a long chat with "friends" that tehy know from before etc. etc. etc. it's gone over the line.
I usually tell all people doing that, not only germs and frenchs, i even tell swedish people to stop it and keep it in english or use private chat or something

Well if ppl are talking in a language you dont understand its obviously not meant for you. Just move along and ignore it.
If its something you have to know I'm sure they will use english or whatever you can understand.
When I was playing on Mid/Excal there were ppl talking swedish/dutch/finnish/other funny languages everywhere and no one cared, so why now?
In my 7 years of mudding I was guilded mainly with swedes which spoke swedish most of the time and I *gasp* actually learned basic swedish!!! Imagine that!

English it is, and english it should be. Though the english of many germans might be far from our loved Oxford english, it should be enough for open minded and tolerant english people to cope with. I have, personally, yet to meet a french with acceptable english , but they surely exist and I am looking forward to meet them. And I'll love to test my very old school-french on them.

But whenever you encounter a non-english speaking person and want to flame him, make sure you are not of the l33t-kind english speaker. For speaking native tounge, talk /gu, same for slang. But on the main channels, please stick to kind of a school-english, so anybody may understand. Exceptions, of course, if you think you have to spice up the game with some racial enemity.

My Guild actually looks forward to the english server, as many translations to germans simply suck

In a way I reckon it would be good to have Germans vs French vs English (+ *sundries*, sorry Scandinavians ), if only to keep the interest in the pvp server going. Having said that the English 'team' are gonna suffer badly simply because of the massive difference in number of players (and that's assuming all the Finns/Swedes/Norweigans/Dutch team up with us).

Anyway, a little German/French can actually go a long way. An orange-con (and obviously French) guy jumped me on Gorre the other day. I just stood there and said "'lut " to him - at which point, assuming I was French, he put his weapon away and started chatting. My (admittedly lapsed) French was sufficient to keep a conversation with him thinking I was one of his countrymen long enough for my health to regen, at which point I stood up and buried my sword in his head. See, international relations can be fun!

indeed you can improve your "other" language skills in online games....as well...when i had my original excal skald i was in FoM (scandinavian guild), where all talked the mother language in /gu ....well, written danish/norwegian is close to equal (except for ur damned counting system!!!! ), but you would here swedes who said stuff like "before i joined FoM i had a hard time understanding norwegian, but now after 2months i can read and understand it perfectly well..." etc

tho racial wars in games tend to get a bit stupid and abusive

anyone who played/plays(sad fk if u still play ) Legend of Mir should now that, when in the beta we kinda had english speaking vs the koreans "gifv itamz for strong korea!" springs to mind the pk wars in towns etc lasted for hours and you couldnt feel safe anywhere practically =/ ...

yep it's a fact that most german and french people just suck at english.
and yep xyza is right. In Sweden all american/english tv shows movies and so on are in english with swedish subtitles. So we hear english many hours every day, just the way it is, ALL swedes do that, so learn english more or less automatically.
Whereas in germany all tv shows are spoken in german, even the american ones. -------> many germans suck at english. Pretty simple really.

I think I'm down for a PvP guild, but coz it's been soooo long since I signed up for it, I've forgotten which it is now. I'm gonna have to start trawling my old emails. :/

Big guilds

Hmmm , if ppl start forming big guilds it might be safer but still , there won't be somuch fun as expected in PvP, PvP will become like emain at excal atm, Won't it be more fun to make just normall sized guilds, make a ladder, put these guilds on it (duuh ;D ), and then do controlled fights like 20 vs 20 or something. After battle the remaining ppl just ress eachother, no matter what guild, we all had fun and same good friends ;-D
