Why my cd-r / dvd drives KEEP dying.
In the last two years Ive had 3 cd drives and one dvd drive all fail. They just stop reading the discs.
Ive tried uninstalling
updating drivers
reinstalling windows (coincidence but hey )

To no avail.

Any other ideas ?

That's exactly what I thought. I once opened up the PC case belonging to a smoker and it was absolutely caked in ash inside and the CD drive died as a result of being caked up.

Nope I dont smoke, and ive just had all the cables out and re-fitted

Have you tried a lens cleaner? Might be other particles getting in (we have loads of plain old dust and breadcrumbs here)...

bit of a shot in the dark...but your software can break your CD writer, overburns..etc...in fact, I read using disks faster than supported by your DVD writer can damage the writer...I guess you did try different software packages...

using discs rated faster than your drive will not damage it, faster discs are just made of a higher grade and tolerance, and the drive would burn them at a slower speed.

better question for you, same PSU for all of them? how do you wire your machine? All optical and mass storage on a single rail?
