Ive just bought a Canon A550 ,which seems nice enough, but for one problem.

When I connect it to my pc via the USB cable, I get the error message "windows could not load the installer for Image. Contact you hardware vendor". Ive installed all the stuff that came with the camera, to no avail. Annoyingly enough, I plugged it into my wifes laptop, which runs Vista unlike my XP, and it worked without anything needing to be installed. I then found myself in the odd position of burning pictures to a cd so that I could take them to the next room and install onto my own PC! Not good enough .

Ive googled a bit but cant see any answers, does anyone here know anything about it?

Ive posted this on OCUK but no help, anyone here got any ideas?

I suggest you have something from Canon already on your system thats buggering things up.

Try booting in safe mode and doing it.

Ive got all installed that came with the camera, but I only did that after I got this error. Theres nothing else from Canon on my PC.
My old cak Goodmans camera works fine, XP sees it as a removeable disc, like it does my phone.

Sidestep the problem and buy a usb2 card reader - usually cost 5-10 quid for a decent enough one. Then you take the card out of the camera, slot it in to the reader and everything is that much more straightforward.

The camera isn't taking pictures in raw format is it?

It will need to go into USB 2.0 throd. Iirc you have a new mobo so it should be that anyways. I had issues with a Canon camera at work once, they had trouble with the software, cannot for the life of me remember what I did to fix it.

Have you tried installing new software from their website?

Failing that parhaps you could try removing the Added Software/Drivers etc and start again.

Or Buy Vista for your PC!!

How about (if you don't want a card reader) you uninstall the Canon drivers and see if Windows installs it for you. If it doesn't do a Windows update via their site (making sure you check the hardware updates it will show) and just see if Windows has the drivers for it.

I just assumed I had USB 2.0 tbh. Its a new case with a new motherboard (christ I seem to buy one every six months ) , but looking at Device Manager none of them are called "enhanced" USB ports so Id have to assume now that they'e 1.1, which is a little irritating

Is that a driver update or hardware?

Hang on a minute, my friend Sandra tells me that 2 of my USB ports are version 2.0, dont know which though.

You installed the latest software from their website? Or what came with the Camera?

Sometimes you need the very latest software.

Have you tried adding the Camera as Hardware?

WELL.

Ive just tried it on my sons XP pc, it works fine,and thats without installing any software at all, just like the wifes laptop. I think that points to a software problem on my PC.

Silly question - when plugging it in, have you tried ignoring everything that pops up and just going to My Computer and seeing if a new drive is there (i.e. the camera, and its contents).

if you bought it in the last three or four years its almost certainly guaranteed to be usb 2. usb 1.1/2 are completely backward/forward compatible anyway so I wouldnt worry too much about that.

try plugging it in via a usb hub if you have one - its the kind of ridiculous thing that might work due to an obscure bug somewhere in the chain.

the installer program for the type of thing you plugged into the usb port is b0rked.

i would remove the usb route hubs in device manager then refresh so they get loaded again. Then run the sfc \scannow thingambob......(to fix any broken files)

sometimes if you had another usb device in the port windows doesnt really forget its gone, so when you plug another usb device in (eg your camera) it gets all confused. Removing the usb route hubs gets around that type of thing..

Throd:

Go into Control Panel.
Double click System - Select the Hardware Tab and Click the Device manager Button
Find the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and Delete whats under that heading.
Refresh/Scan for Hardware changes.

Click the Start Button and Select Run.
Type in there sfc /scannow

Thats what brooky means.
