The Father-in-Law has been decided for that he's getting a Camcorder for Xmas. He doesn't have a PC. What are his options ? What's all this Hi 8 business and this VHS-C gubbins ? Any clues ?

Hi8 is a higher quality version of the 8mm videotape format. It uses a higher luminance resolution to produce a sharper picture than regular 8mm videotape.

And I couldn't find a good enough definition of VHS-C in the time provided.

I think thats only true of VHS-C, which uses the same format as VHS, but in a smaller shell. Hi-8 is a completely different format, and unreadable by VHS machines.

You're better off getting mini-DV tbh, hi-8 never was any good.

Which? did video cameras this month or last. They said that the cheapest digital camera they tried was better picture quality than the most expensive analogue (Hi-8 or VHS-C). This would be a much better way to go.

The fact that he doesn't have a PC shouldn't make a difference, they can still be plugged into his VCR and copied that way.

Yup really

In fact you don't really need to copy them, you can just plug the whole camera into the TV and use it as a player, for best quality playback. The only problem then is sharing them, but for that you could copy as well.

I have a Sony digital 8 camera, which has a remote control for playback and I think the picture quality is very good, and it also lets me download onto my PC and edit and burn to DVD, but that is hardly compulsory.
