Right, back in the day I was big into hardcore rave (early nineties when I was like 12 or something)

Growing up in Scotland, Hanger 13 in Ayr was thee local hardcore place to be until everyone started taking E and dying and it got closed or something like that.

Now, I no longer have my shitty tape-to-tape copies of Ultimate Buzz, Rezerection, Bass Generator etc but I seem to distinct memory that one famous/popular rave track had the sound of an electronic clucking chicken - anyone know what track that is/was?

For some reason, i'm thinking it's by "Ramirez", but that could be totally wrong.

Thomas Dolby did a track with a clucking chicken on the drum beat, White City from The Flat Earth :) It even had a squawk on every 4th bar :)

hardcore is horrible, its proper playground music, i've never understood why people like it

All about House/electro

I'll ask on my music forums see if any of the hardcore nuts know it

The only thing that comes remotely to a clucking chicken sound I know off is

Zolex - Time Modulator.

edit: or maybe Robert Armani - Hit Hard?

Maybe because a lot of us grew up with it? When I were a lad there was no trance, house etc, just raves like Ark, Life, Dreamscape, Zone, Helter Skelter and ofc the warehouse raves, where you all meet up at a service station on the M6 and pile into the back of a white van, not knowing where you would end up. Great days :D
