If there are any here that is :) Anyone who knows anything about Norway is also welcome!

I'm planning a holiday with a mate, and the idea is to trek by car around Norway in the last week of August/first week of September. The route will look something like the enclosed pic -or you can peruse this link, and I want to know of you guys know any cool spots we should visit along the way. We're already visiting a friend in Oslo, and I am certainly looking forward to driving in the mountains from Oslo to Lillehammer.

Are you guys aware of anything I need to look out for, eg mosquito's (o0), insane cold or harsh conditions, availability of diesel (as my car drinks it). I'm aware I will have to pay tolls in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and perhaps some other places, tunnels, etc. Is that expensive? Any really cool hostels you think I should stay at or museums I should visit? Nightlife as in babes, not owls ;)

Anyways, let me know :)

Remember everything is expensive in Norway, so I'd guess even the tolls are! If there is anything like a bit further north in Sweden mosquito's are plentiful!

All I remember about driving in Norway is that fuel is expensive (this was 3-4 years ago but I don't imagine its got cheaper!) and the speed limits are ridiculously low (90km/h on the motorway).

aha it was like that in Iceland too. I was a bit shocked to see that diesel was more expensive than regular unleaded there as well (it's the other way round here in the Netherlands). Also the Icelander's sport numero uno was to break the speed limit at all possible times.

If you end up anywhere near Telemark there is a place called Sommerland which is a pretty awesome water park. Try and find something to do on the Oslo fjord, boat trip or something. Mum's Norweigan, it's a really special place.

You're from the Netherlands?

I always assumed you were British! ;d

cheers mate! Telemark is a little off our route (which is now currently this btw) but I'll certainly keep it in mind!

Well if you are interested in hiking you will drive past the Jotunheim nationalpark(near Lom) - a great place with the highest point in the north of europe, Gjaldhøpiggen and Glittertind.

Got a blog post about my trip with a few pictures here:
Hiking in Jotunheimen
And also a short stupid video(it is okay to laugh at my videoediting skills: YouTube - Jotunheim 2009

wow echome that looks pretty damn awesome (and pretty much what I am into as well :D) thanks for that, we'll fit some hiking into our plans for sure. not as full on as what you did, but still, if I can stuff a snowball down my mate's anorak I'll be well pleased :D

Mosquitos shouldn't be a problem but bring some repellent anyway, you won't need it in the mountains and on the coast but you will when driving from Larvik to Lillehammer/Lom. The weather on the west coast (particularly around Bergen) can be quite cool and very windy, obviously if you're driving mountain routes then check forecasts so you're prepared each day - it can be unpredictable.

My favourite parts of Oslo are Akershus Fortress (by Aker Brygge, overlooking the fjord) and Vigeland's sculpture park in Frognerparken. Outside of Oslo, if you fancy some fishing, Øyeren is one of Norway's biggest lakes and is just off the E6 near Lillestrøm. The only other place in that area I'd recommend is Fetsund Lenser, a logging museum which is more interesting than it sounds and is a pleasant if unspectacular place to visit... I'm only saying it because my girlfriend is from Fetsund and she'll withhold sex if I don't.

Elsewhere, near Stavanger visit Preikestolen because I reallyreallyreally want to go there.

You're missing out by not visiting the south east coast - between Kristiansand and Larvik - I'm going there in a couple of weeks.

Anything else I (or more specifically the missus) can help with, just ask.

p.s. photos or it didn't happen

That was on Coast last night. Gorgeous. Very like Milford Sound. Really made me want to visit (I've only been to Oslo).

Geiranger pees on Milford from a great height imo. Now that I have been to both this is what I think, at least. That is to say that before a couple of days ago I would have told you hands down that the drive into and the first views of Milford Sound was the most awesome drive/view ever. Geiranger Fjord has now taken the top spot both in views along the way there and view of the fjord itself. HolyWTFpwn.

Currently I am in Bergen, and while I find the city quite lovely it has been raining for (at least) since I got here and I've been rained on for a couple days before that too. Had exactly one sunny day in Oslo which was awesome though.

See enclosed pano of Bergen for an impression of the weather :)

ohhhh very beautiful. Sorry you are experiencing rain. I am just back from Sweden for a short 4 day jaunt and the weather was lovely :)

This is not the exact place I went for a Crayfish party (don't like them much however these were ok and the barbecued pork after was divine) but similar except the summer house we were at was set further back from the lake.

The water there is crystal clear and the waters edge so sandy.... I want to go back and never leave ;/

well, Bergen do have rain at about 250 days of the year. so the chances of going there on a non rainy day are pretty slim ;)
