Help! So, I'm working with my cousin for a while until I get a proper job, he has a small office, only 4 users. We need a free software solution to share and sync calendars and contacts that does not require a server and that is easy to use and install. I've had a google around but most of the open source stuff seems quite complex or needs a server.

I don't mind if the solution is just for calendar and does not include contacts, as they all use different email clients at the moment.

Google Apps. Assuming they have a domain name it works nicely. Use the free edition if you get it to take over their e-mail and set up shared calendars, should do the job. They'd need to pay if they wanted shared contacts though.

Okay change of plan - we are going to use outlook. Can we sync and share contacts calenders without exchange? Lots of links on google claim to do it, but I don't trust the apps.

I set up a similar system using Windows Messaging for a similar network, utilising one of the better PC's as a server-cum-workstation, and added calendar options to it later on - but the Google stuff is far better/more reliable. Doing that in outlook is possible without exchange but not IMO worth the effort.

Thunderbird, with Sunbird (using Google Calendars) & Zindus (contact sync) add-ins.

Good luck, have fun! There are plenty of different software plugins which can sort of do the job, but obviously they might not be as well integrated as an Exchange server doing it.

Getting locked into Outlook is just plain evil if you want free/cheap.

Google Calendar Sync maybe?
