If you look in the lan status (double click two icons in task manager) you sometimes see its either Bytes or Packets. Is there a way to force it to be on Bytes all the time?

Seconded.

It must be set somewhere, but the defaults seem to vary! The family PC at home displays packets (XP SP1 full install), while my XP0 install has always defaulted to Bytes.

My new PC is XP sp1 and it says bytes.
The help says "The amount of data, in either bytes or packets,....."
How helpful :/

Any given packet can be any number of bytes between a minimum (TCP/IP header at least) and a maximum (64KB including the header). A byte is just, er, well *A* byte.

So packet count actually tells you approximately fuck all, whilste byte count actually tells you how much the interface has transferred.

Ha! The Home PC is now displaying Bytes... I can't believe that it's not controlled by a registry setting somewhere.
