Ping sucks in evenings on the modem (which is the time I would normally play). I've tried, and the best I could get using three different isps and a 1337 modem config. is 190 though it felt like 250ish. Worst was 400

I can't get better conn. for the mere reason in two months time I don't know where I'll be living, or what I will be doing. Hence, parents will not let me get broadband due to the 12 month contract though I can afford with savings I have tucked away somewhere.

I know BY do a month by month basis, but I can't get it where I live, I'm something like half a mile out of Telewest control or something :/

I used to get 150 ping on 56k (NTL). Was hardly different from cable. But, the highest ping I've ever had is 22000. I doubt anyone can beat that.

Don't give up Dolly.

You must be using wrong modem/isp.

I use Clara and a US Robotics external modem.
I have a decent 'init' string that I stole from
somewhere that seems to do the trick.
I will dig it out if you want.

I can Ping down to 130 (although only when everyone
stands still - mass campfest anyone ?).

Average around 200, rising to 300 when a big firefight
breaks out on a server and up to 400 on the new maps
(Havana, Chateau, Survivor etc).
Pings are best after 11pm.

I'm trying to get ADSL but BT insist I have an
'incompatible service' on the line but won't/can't tell
me what it is.
If I can't get ADSl I will play on a modem until they
physically won't let me.

Most days I'm lucky to break even. I console myself
by periodically hurling abuse at the LPBs and secretly
recalculating everyone's score by multiplying Kills *
Ping then congratulating myself on how l33t I am (I'm
a sad sad old man with too much lager in the fridge).

I played Q2 (a much faster game than cs) for 2 years on a modem.
One of my kids plays cs now on a modem. Its not as good, but its not unplayable, thats just silly tork
