I get an email from GAME every fortnight or so with news of new games and prize draws etc in it, probably due to when I signed up for a reward card.

It continues to amaze me that there is no link in the email to www.game.net .

There is no excuse I can think of that makes any sense for this. It is absolutely free marketing, the emails are going out anyway. Here I'll even do it for you, just copy and paste....

www.game.net for all you online gaming needs.

WARNING: Dubious comedy

It's all corporate bullshit isn't it. They have to have meetings about meetings, and do a S.W.O.T analysis about whether to go for a curry or chinese for a company meal.

Oh for the days of old when decision making was actually done in a vaguely timely fashion by those actually qualified and "in the know" (i.e. DBs, Ted, etc). It's a crying shame really that the whole stain of corporateness means the public ends up with little or no information about where things are headed.

I wonder if this is anything like a typical business meeting at GAME:

Suit 1: "So all, now that we've bought our way into this new fangled multiplayer gaming scene, what now?"
Suit 2: "Hmmm... don't look at me, I handle keeping the inventory in EB up to date."
Suit 3: "Perhaps we could run a promotion on XBox Live headsets"
Suit 1: "That's consoles Steve. Different thing."
Suit 3: "Ah Im with you. So, perhaps a push on The Sims Online yeah?"
Suit 1: "No no, these people play these shoot em up games with each other."
Suit 3: "Ah yeah, like Grand Theft Auto."
Suit 1: "...Well, not really... More like Quake and Counterstrike"
Suit 2: "Like that Sujoy fella"
Suit 3: "......"
Suit 3: "So is this Quake thing big then?"
Suit 1: "Apparently it was a while ago, now its mainly Counterstrike they seem to play."
Suit 3: "Ah, with Gordon Freeman"
Suit 1: "That's the one"

Tbh all of the above is just a passing shot (not at BW) since I don't even play Quake et al at all anymore.... You pays your money, you makes yer choice.

Actually having spoken to a few of the "suits" at the last BarryBeer thats a vague shot across the bow of people who although clearly corporate aren't necessarily (imho) as retarded as a lot of you believe.

The difference in focus now is clearly (again imho) from "get the job done" (old Ted & DB's style) to "break even or better" (GAME & quite frankly any business' style). And that ain't the suits themselves, corporate does that to any business, not just BW.

Scooba - A point well made. Btw, I think those from the adslguide forum may be interested in much more frequent bf1942 games, many of whom have recently subscribed to BW. Hopefully numbers on the servers will increase soon.
Personally I subscribed to BW cos I think i've received significantly more than £12.99 worth of benefit over the years. It's disappointing to see the servers so empty, but I dont regret paying the subs. It's true there are other servers which you dont have to subscribe to ........ but the best days of gaming imho were when all the BW servers were packed all the time. The games on them seemed more fun, the players were of a higher standard, you could see the same people on the forums the same day talking about those games and arranging the next ones. These other free servers just arent the same. The sooner people get back on the BW servers, the better.
Why would you pay for something that you can get free elsewhere?
Well, doesn't it seem strange that you got all this for free for so many years? Someone has to provide the hardware, software, connection, support, etc, etc, etc. I just can't get my head around the idea that this should be free. Why? Anyway, that argument could go on forever .....
The way forward, as I see it, is as has been done by some already ........ i.e. organise a weekly (at first) organised game and publicise it. I've played in one or two bf1942 games and there simply is no comparison between the quality of the servers (16 ping on nildram adsl mwhahahahaha)/enjoyment factor in these, than a regular public game with monkeys running around shotting their own team, 12v5 and no admins to keep things running smoothly.

Without going into all the BW subs don't work gumpff - the biggest factor is that unless you are a subscriber you can't see the servers on GS and ASE - hence to the casual gamer (who probably never realised there was a community and website) - BW just disappeared.

The simple fact is that the people on ADSLguide are stunned that they can book servers and organise games for £13 a year. They shouldn't be stunned as they should know about the service. They all play games (but aren't exactly "hardcore") and many of them have no problem with paying a third the cost of a new game to have fun games rather than the shit you get on most publics. The fact that people like them (who form the vast majority of what should be game's target market) don't know about the service says it all really.

There are enough people out there willing to pay - but how can you expect them to do this when nobody has the remotest clue the service actually exists?

All been said before but given the enthusiasm I see on AG it was worth saying again.

Scooba I'm not sure I agree, liaisons and admins from other games shouldnt be required to help you filll your servers. Granted it would be nice and help the community, but they might be busy doing other things. Just because they are chatting away in irc doesnt mean that they aren't also doing other things.

I know that not all admins and liaisons even give time to their own games, but for those that do it is a bit unfair to expect them to give more time for a game they may care or know nothing about.

Anyway afaik Bigfoot is restrucuring the admins and liaisons for every game, which should mean that GAME launches with some willing and helpful people.

i think he was saying that there was a bf game on the bw servers. its a regular game that we have every week. how pissed off would u be if people are in YOUR channel talking about what EA/BY/WP/JOLT server to go to when theres clearly a game on already closer to home.

or maybe im just wrong

Durzel you cheeky monkey, believe it or not some of us at GAME do know about games...

You're thinking of C*rrys, maybe?;)

On a general note; in defence of GAME, there's now a less transparent thought process because you don't let your competition know what's goiung and you don't upset the whole PLC share stuff by leaking information left right and centre - but you have to balance that with keeping customers in the know.

But actually I'd say that the attitude of the peeps that come from GAME Digital - the bit that handles GAME.NET - and those that have joined us from BarrysWorld, is generally on the same page; (and thanks for saying what you said Mystic) tho if, like me you mainly do console stuff PC multiplayer isn't always your focus. But Da Boss knows his stuff, don't you worry. Certainly as people you would put us in a room and not know who was from which group - apart from that at Head Office we wear the occasional tie; but I don't believe clothes maketh the man, and it works both way. But that's another story....

Though we expect to be painted as baddies with the old guard as the goodies, every now and then. In fact, we've bought some shades and full length leather jackets so we can do it in style...

Mwah-hah-ha-ha...

If you really want to go for the authentic 'old guard' look (ie, ted) you'd be better off with beer stained t-shirts tbh. Oh, and dont shave for a month.

Ironically, that's exactly how I look at home. My nickname at school was 'tramp' and my attire of choice was a large, tweedy coat which looked like someone had slept in it. Which they probably had.

Speaking of war type stuff, I recently downloaded the demo of IL2: Stürmgruppenhoffer (or something) and found it to be pretty damn good. Anyone fancy giving me a multiplayer game tonight?

jurinko2.jpg

You can have proper dogfights in the demo as well, and have a range of planes you can fly. So, anyone up for it some time tonight?

Website here: http://www.il2sturmovik.com/

I can provide a download link to the demo if need be.
