Fair enough that you see your bias - I'm the same in terms of bias as I just wouldn't feel safe riding (as in driving) a bike. Have you considered however the fact that you were on a bike was the reason why someone pulled out on you, because they don't expect a bike coming due to size etc.? Especially if they were turning right and you pulled out (they do have the right of way).

Get a good car, and it's never dangerously boring - again that phrase sits uneasily, are you suggesting that you need to push limits (and I don't mean speed) to keep things interesting? That puts me even further off bikes if that's the case.

Your idea that there'd be less accidents if people ride bikes is mostly unfounded tbh - that can't be emprically proven, although you have raised an interesting point indirectly; a lot of elderly drive cars feeling safe and have reduced reaction times which can cause accidents (and that is a fact). I wonder how many of them would don leathers and take to a bike? Not many I would think.

Good luck on your riding though Azurus :)

It was a long while since the incident I used as an example there happened, so I honestly cant say - I've had enough similar incidents since then that I really just cant remember it at all :)

Cars to tend to have a habit of pulling up and looking right, then looking left for a long while as they wait for traffic to go past, then just pull out across the road to go right into the far lane without looking at all. I feel like I'm getting a feel for it now because you can see the person as you come up to the junction looking the wrong way, I tend to just slow down and downshift to make the bike rev higher and make more noise so they hopefully hear me :) it also then gives me time to react to any car-driver antics.

As for the "dangerously boring" bit, I'm feel much the same as I did a year ago, the idea of driving as opposed to riding really isn't appealing for me at all.

I feel that it would be boring, not because I always 'push limits', just because its so enjoyable every single time I go out, whether its the ride to work or just a sunday ride with no real destination, its always been good fun, relaxing and exhilarating (to lesser or greater extents) all at the same time.

As for the last bit, I did at one point have a link to a site that had the number of accidents reported in the UK, for cars and for motorcycles, listed by both ones with fatalities and those without. I'm pretty sure I'd posted it on FH a long while ago during a similar discussion, so I'll dig that up at some point to repost :)

I thought my minor query didn't warrant a brand new thread but in hindsight i probably shouldn't have necroed this.

It doesnt really matter all that much surely? :) The thread should be useful for anyone with similar questions, its all 'first bike' related tbh!

There's no doubt that car drivers are less aware of bikers - however I wonder if sometimes the opposite is also true; bikers don't realise that cars aren't as nimble and capable of taking opportunities in traffic as bikers (such as bikers getting through a gap or speeding up to get ahead when car drivers wouldn't contemplate it).

It's nice to see you enjoy your ride(s) anycase :)

In terms of accidents I was more considering the fact that you can't really quantify how many accidents might have happened because they go unreported. There are bound to be numerically more car accidents than bike ones because of the higher number of cars on the road - if your figure include proportions then it's a reasonable comparison (i.e. x% of car drivers had accidents, against x% of bike riders). I suppose then it's hard because we'll never know the regularity of peoples' journeys and distances covered, and of course the higher risks on certain roads etc.

I say all this whilst considering getting a bike licence myself because my wife like bikes and would love to be on the back of one on lazy Sunday afternoons etc. and I would appreciate looking out for bikers more from it.
