Tempted to finalise my rig this weekend with an extra 19" TFT and 6000+ X2.

As for graphics cards, you MUST buy one of the 8600-8800 series or Radeon equiv.

I have never seen a more dramatic performance boost than when I upgraded from a 7600GS to a 8600GTS, for £120 I went from being able to run Bioshock on medium settings at an "ok" pace to running it flat out high without a single frame skip.

You don't need to splash out a lot these days to make a stupidly good system, mine in total probably only cost me short of £650.

Where abouts did you get yours from? And was it 650 including the monitor or without one? Thx for all the replies from everyone so far btw

Yes, that also includes the monitor.

I got it from a retailer down the road from me but you'll most likely get similar prices from the likes of Dabs, Aria or E-buyer.

You can also save some cash buying motherboard bundles off Ebay, some come with amazing fans.

The 8600GT is utter junk and not worth even considering. The 8600 GTS is around £130 and offers almost 50% lower peformance than the £180 8800 GTS at lower resolutions. More importantly it barely offers adequate performance in current games such as Supreme Commander at 1280x1024 with no anti-aliasing (read jaggy city), it will not cope with games like Crysis at anything more than 800x600 unless you are happy with sub 30 frames per second.

In short it is a poor investment if you intend to be playing new released games and still want to be playing the new games released in September 2008. As Anandtech rightly said....

If you can live without full H.264 decoding support and you still want DirectX 10, the 8800 GTS 320 is currently so much faster than the 8600 GTS that we would recommend spending the extra ~$75.

Either spend a bit more and get the 8800GTS 320mb. Or spend a little less and get the 7900GS, then stick the extra you saved into the bank to go towards your next graphics card. The 8600 range offers poor perfomance for the price, all the top review sites are in agreement.

i put my computer together myself when i bought all the peices. It was a struggle the first time round, i made a few mistakes and was like wtf with the wires. Then after it was all up and running i looked at my mobo manual and it said how it should be done! took me like 3-4hours to do it. But now takes me 15mins

alot of intel cpus are cheaper now afaik as Amd brough something out... dont know for certain... but check the conroe e6600 or whatever its called. Its what I have and does the job.
