Advice Buying a new Desktop

So...

Current tower is almost dead. I need to buy a completely new system (tower and OS)

Problem is, i am way out of touch when it comes to gaming systems and components.

I should have no problem putting a machine together if neccicary, but am not adverse to buying a custom built system if that helps and is easier.

Could anyone recommend a decent build firm, and the kind of specs i should be aiming for please?

Intel or amd?
Nvidia or ATI?

I have between 500 and 1000 to spend if needed, but i would rather it be around the 750 mark.

Go intel instead of AMD.
Nvidia or ATI. Not a lot of difference but probably go for nvidia
