Heya,

My brother wants a Laptop. So far we cant find anything better than this Dell Inspiron 1525.

Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop Product Details

Spec is 2ghz CPU (core 2 duo)
2GB RAM
250GB HDD

Max budget is £400. GFX card is not really an issue.

The reason we were trying to avoid dell is their mousepads. At work I see countless dell laptops suffering from issues with teh touchpad leading to the mouse moving on its own accord, or the double tap (double click) not working properly etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

What most people don't realise is that the trackpads used on Dell's are identical to those used on Acers, Fujitsus and some Apples, albeit with different paint, so it's not quite as likely to fail as the rest.
I've always said the Lenovo's have the best feeling trackpads out of all machines, but not sure how that'd fit in with the price range.
Otherwise, lets have a look whats on market:

*Cashback until Oct 31st* HP 6720s Business Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 2GB 160GB 15.4" WXGA Brightview Vista Home Premium Office 07 60 Day Trial 1 year warranty - Ebuyer isn't bad for £400...

Lenovo 3000 N200 Core 2 Duo T5750 2Ghz, 2GB 160GB HDD, 15.4" DVDRW XP Pro - Ebuyer is slightly over, think that's the one I recommended to someone else on here but can't remember!

Acer Aspire 7720 Santa Rosa T5450 2048MB 120GB DVD-SM 17" ACB Windows Vista Premium - Ebuyer for the Acer touch.

Tom bought a Lenovo and he was pretty happy with it...

They do look pretty good!

Thanks guys. I think the Dell is the best choice because the specs are the same, except the Dell has a 250gb HDD. Also what you said about the Touchpad is reassuring!

I still don't get why new laptops are still using the old T5 series of chips though...Isn't there quite a large leap between these T5750's we see all too often these days in comparison to the T7300 as an example? I know there are even newer around but maybe one of the techies here would be able to shed some more light on it? Is one of those things I should've already read up on tbh...

If you are going Dell, their Outlet store might be worth a look, they're refurbished models (nothing wrong with them and you can get standard warranty), there are usually good deals there, and is a bit cheaper again, though you cant really customise the system (aside from the warranty and peripherals) Dell Outlet Homepage - a division of Dell Products, selling refurbished computer equipments.. The systems are ones that have been previously returned for non technical reasons, ie cancellation of orders etc, but can't be sold as new on the regular site

Gonna get him to buy the £400 one, but will give him £60 of my money so we can get 3gb ram instead of 2gb & 1440x980 resolution instead of 1280x800.
