Ok some of you may have gathered I’m in the process of building a new computer at the moment. In a stupendous fashion I have managed to blow my new Hard Drive by shorting it. I hadn’t screwed it in the case before turning it on and simply left it resting on the case (metal) it’s definitely bust as I have tried putting it in my HD caddy where it makes no noise or smell.

In reflection they should probably kill idiots like me but do you think ill be able to send it back and get a new one if I… sugar coat the explanation to the retailer? :touch:

If I was going to send it back and had only just had it (did you not even get to fdisk/format it?) I'd probably be cheeky and send it back as DOA.

That’s another major problem ‘cause I formatted it in the caddy before installing in the PC im building :( Will they be able to tell this giving that its blown? Any good excuses? I was thinking… an older boy told me to do it sir. But I don’t think that’s going to work in this case.

something I would definately try and do.

if it is definately busted - you could inadvertantly damage the pins on the IDE connector and claim it arrived like that and demand to know why it didnt fail quality control.

As long as you didn't put any files on it, or got as far with windows setup to enter your name and product key, they would be hard pressed to prove it was you EXCEPT for the fact that the files would have dates and times during which you possessed the drive, but that relies on a) you having set the bios clock correctly, and b) them being able to find files on the drive, which if it's dead they won't.

You are a berk for killing the drive, short of sitting it on tinfoil or a bed of iron filings I'm amazed you managed it, but now it's fubar what do you honestly have to lose? Worst case they refuse to replace it and you're still without a drive.

yup...pretty odd that you broke it like that (you did remember to plug in the power cable ;) )...tbh, it might have been faulty anyway....I'd send it back with a clear conscience

I can't see how it's possible to short it in the way you describe. The drive after all is screwed into the metal case. I reckon smurkin could have hit the nail on the head tbh.

I recently had a 2 year old memory card go tits up in a camera, there were no images on it. So I went and bought another, which turned out to look exactly the same as the old one. I then took the broken one back with the new receipt. They replaced it no questions so I ended up with 2 working cards for the price of 1 . I feel dirty, well a little :)

Anyway, I'd just send it back, saying it was DOA... if it doesn't work, get them return it you , and sell it on eBay as a "broken HD" , and see what happens.

You'll still need a new drive mind.

My point silver was that whether rested or screwed either way the drive is attached to the metal of the case.

I have to send it them to “have a look at” and see if it needs replacing.. ooh err I think ill get rumbled to be honest. They didn’t ask if id formatted or put any files on the HD so there’s still hope. :eek6:
