I've had a linkstation for over 6 months, had no problems apart from a couple of times I've had to reboot it (via the power cord) when the weather got a bit hot. It is sitting behind my TFT monitor, so I probably caused a ventilation problem with where I placed it.

They are pretty good bits of kit and are fairly easy to administer.

The TeraStation is good if (a) you want close to 1Tb, or (b) you want the additional security of RAID if it is not being used as a simple backup device for the PCs on the network, i.e. it is your main storage.

If, like me, you merely want a NAS as a secure place to backup existing files on networked PCs, or somewhere to hold big but unnecessary files, then it is a tad expensive for what you want. I went for a 300Gb Maxtor One-Touch Shared Storage drive at about £200.

Most smaller NAS devices, like the LinkStation, the Maxtor Shared Storage, Freedom and Linksys offerings, have print servers built-in and can take a couple of extra USB drives for additional space. Above that, the TeraStation does not offer a lot extra.

Another option is the LinkSys NSLU2, which is the file server on its own, retailing at around £30, you can attach 4 USB drives into it, but I don't think it has print server capability and the USB drives will need to be formatted specifically for the device.
