So, I'm with ADSL24 at present, they started off really nice but they're starting to get really shit now. Arse speeds compared to when I first got it etc so I was considering changing ISP when a friend mentioned that BT were alright these days...

That true? friend said they're crap for P2P stuff but for gaming in terms of ping and stability they're great, any truth to this before I enter into an 18 month contract of crapness.

Well, they havn't been too bad I guess. One time net went down for a few days and it required speaking to someone in India, very loudly, very slowly for hours on end.

Also, there is this whole Packet shaping shit they do to what seemingly is just WAR.

But yeh, its okay. Nothing too brill, nothing too bad.

If you can get Be Broadband (or O2 if you're with them for your mobile) get that. It's cheap, reliable and very quick. www.bethere.co.uk.

From my experience of BT (several of my clients have them) they're slightly overpriced and a bit shit.

Not a good start, can't open the website, says page cannot be displayed :p (tried a few times over the last few hours) been totally surfing the internet the last few hours trying to dig up more info on BT Broadband, all comes back to the same things I was told, shit for P2P stable/fast for online gaming.

Guess i'd just have to revert to newsgroups for my *cough* not so legal activities.

The Be* issues should be fixed, they had a DNS hiccup.

I think the slightly amusing thing for this is that BT has outsourced their Usenet access to Giganews - so you actually get binary newsgroup access included with your subscription. Might be limited to 3 connections at a slower speed or something, but you should be able to get it.

Still wouldn't recommend BT as an ISP though!

Gaming and general use - no problem.

P2P is choked heavily and deliberately though - although this is becoming standard across all the big 6 ISP's in the UK.

BT's pretty good, however the automatic updates which result in you having to switch the router off for 10 minutes can be a pest if you go LD.

I use Sky it is very fast un filtered and i have had very few problems only major one being router upgrades which mean you need to be there to hard reset the thing. I get my *downloads* from Megaupload and the like at 1800k and its brilliant.

I took a chance with Talk Talk broadband (18 month contract). Previously to this I was paying a minimum of £19.99 per month and sometimes rising to £35 plus line rental if I really hammered it. Now I pay just £6. The internet is stable and also the guys on the Talk Talk forum are able to mess about with the connection speeds. When I told them I was running a video site they doubled my upload speed.

With regard to BT they are red hot on p2p illegal downloads. Don't be surprised if you get a warning pretty sharpish if you start using bitorrent or something.

18 months is a long time to sign up for something and a very long time if you are not happy. Don't you have a trial period - 10 days or something? If so give it a thorough testing before signing on the dotted line. Me I am going to move to sky next as we already have a pretty comprehensive package. Hopefully I can have free internet then.

Aye I know they're on the ball for illegal stuff, when I was with them about 6 years ago I got a letter from BT which in turn was sent by Universal Studios.... I won't say why for legal reasons :p all I can say is that arse kissing gets you a long way.

Isn't sky broadband via ur satalite tho? in which case it'd be cack if it snows/rains etc? or do sky have a one through the phone now? I shall consider BT abit more, as regards for Talk Talk a friend of mine uses them he says they're ok aswell.

No, Sky broadband is regular DSL through the phone line.

I'm surprised at you having problems with ADSL24. I'm with Aquiss (another Enta reseller) and I've not noticed any particular slowdowns since the migration over to IPSC. I did notice when the Sheffield node had it's fibre cut twice in a few weeks but that was resolved quickly enough.
They play fair by telling you how much you can download in a month and how much you've used up so far. 12AM-8AM each night and all day at weekends is offpeak, go crazy with your download... it doesn't come off your package's bandwidth allocation.

If you click on the banner ^^^, it will take you to the Aquiss site (and give me a referral if you decide to go with them). :)
You can't blame me for trying at least!

Sky were looking at download though the dish and up load though the phone but i don't think it got the speed they wanted. If you have SKY TV the boradband should be a no brainer as its £2 a month for the medium pack. Also the top pack at sky has fair useage but i have never had a problem even when i downloaded over 80gb from MSDN in a weekend.

I deleted my comment as on reflection as it was inappropriate for FH CoC etc.

Just because you're stuck with BT as a phoneline, shouldn't mean you have to use them for broadband provider. All these other providers use a BT line so you should be able to go elsewhere. Once again I recommend www.bethere.co.uk or O2 if you can get it.

If you have sky tv, there is absoluetly no reason why you shouldnt have Sky Broadband. I cant recommend their broadband enough. Had it for over a year and its not gone down on me once.

haha nath.

and i been trying to look into getting sky broadband....

phone up and get given a price as wanted to double check before getting mac code...

Think "hmm that seems more then I remembered

look on website and see "hmm, price seems more then what stated here."

Phone back, get told "you cant get any sort of broadband from us in your area"

Bloody fecking indian call centres. Drive me nuts when they cant speak proper english, give conflicting information and make me want to talk to a wall as i get more sense out of it..

I will stick with shitty tiscali, they bloody annoying me though with traffic shaping (can even use sopcast now it seems) but dont want to get locked into a contract with anyone else that cant provide me with unlimited downloads, line rental and unlimited free calls - sky's price would have been about the same and would get me away from the traffic shaping which is why i was looking into them.

I've been with BT for ages, they aren't that bad tbh, quite expensive tho.

I'd have to recommend o2. I've only been with them for about 6 months but I've never had any real problems and their customer support has always been excellent, download speeds are not throttled and speeds are absolutley stable. It's also a good price package, can't really ask for more!

P2P stuff is crap, while you get unlimited downloads, they happen so fucking slowly, at peak times you're gonna get about 2-3kB/s, which is just pathetic, it only gets close to 100kB/s after about 1am. Other than that, our line is a bit unstable, wouldn't say they were rubbish, but not great either. Been with them since we first got broadband as well.

Honestly, bethere or o2! Top service, super fast downloads, pings all that jazz. I'm surprised there aren't far more people trumping on about how awesome they are.
