Heh, and according to Private Eye The current crop of BT Broadband ads are costing 1 million pounds a day to run. How many exchanges could they convert for that money?

And how long will it take them to make the money back at £30 a month per new subscriber attracted by the ads.

Plus when the potential new BT subscribers realise there's a usage limit on the way and that it's cheaper elsewhere, they'll be really screwed.

I t would be really funny if it wasn't so painfully true.

Firstly, Private Eye is mainly complete bullshit. They're close to as bad as the News of the World for making stories up.

Secondly, advertising and marketing are what they are. That's a whole other debate, about what impact they have on customer levels and whether they are worth it. £1mill a day is nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially when you consider the running costs of an organisation like BT. As a throwaway example, my old organisation (Lloyds TSB) used to pay £1mill in RENT every single day.

And thirdly, usage limits won't matter a jot to potential new BT subscribers. BT is an incumbent, it is a long standing, large and market-controlling force. These are the things that business customers (who provide the majority of the revenue) actually care about, not a few extra quid. Show me a large business that doesn't use major incumbent suppliers (eg Compaq, BT, Microsoft) for their IT contracts. Hell, even the vast majority of non-corporate customers don't care about things like that either, and not just about telecomms - otherwise we'd all be banking with Egg, buying Alfa Romeos and shopping at the Co-Op. Only 'enthusiasts' in any sector actually *really* choose products based on service and price, and they always make the mistake of assuming that's what everyone else makes their choices on, when it fact it's convenience.

Having said that, I have BTO DSL, and my Nildram migration is on Monday. Not because it costs less, or because BT might limit me to 1GB/day, but because the peering for BT, as Wij correctly said, is indeed horrendous. Not to mention the fact that it takes 18 hops to actually get out of the network.

I seem to be the only one here who has been in general perfectly happy with BTO, apart from that port throttling debacle a while back I've had no problems whatsoever with them. I ping fantastically in game, and I've not had a problem that has prevented me connecting for at least 6 months.

BT are going all out with their broadband advertising!!

- This is why they are putting all these restrictions on 56K modem users!!

They just want people to move to broadband - its got nothing to do with bandwidth problems!

Yeah, they want people to move to broadband so once everyone's there they can turn it into one royal gangfuck....

gah it's been a month since demon processed my order and still no cunting line test or nothing... just a shitty welcome pack!

BTW. the BB adverts suck more than Jenna Jameson working overtime.

I have a healthy dislike for BT. Always have. I will only ever rent my line off BT while there is still no choice for me but I wil NEVER EVER use their ISP services.

Monopolies are'nt always a bad thing, but BT most definately are.

Ironically, I was sitting watching TV with my sister the other day, when one of the new "get back in the pipe" Broadband ads came on. She sat through it, bemused, then turned to me and went "what is broadband though?" The ad actually gives >< information as to what broadband is, or why anyone should care.

Well a friend of the family was wandering how I would be getting ADSL when we didn't have cable in my area... after explaining for a thousand times that it was a seperate technology to cable and that "broadband" was only a loose term... obvously the ad made fuck all sense to her...... but I guess yeah it makes people want to find out about it.... I think BTOpenWound should come with a health warning... "Cheif Medical Officers Warning: May cause serious stress and hair loss"

/ED: Wow that is one serious stream of concious thought... :)

No, exactly the opposite (although I can see why you might get that idea from what I wrote). She couldn't give a fuck what broadband is, either before or after the advert. I said to her "what do you think it is then?" "something to do with Sky? TV? Radio? Computers? I dunno, the Internet?" It's the fact that there's absolutely no suggestion of what broadband might be (to the not utterly demented, or those that already know), and even the BT/telecomms branding is so weak - if you want to grab someone's attention, you've got to at least give them a clue.

Whatever ISP you change to a lot of your money will still go in to filling BTs debt hole.

Doesn't escape from the fact that they are teh h00rs!
