Think this is a known problem with VIA chipset motherboards and the USB modem (I assume it's the Alcatel 'frog' ?).

Things to try...

Update the VIA 4-in-1 drivers (can't remember the URL sorry)

If you have a USB hub, plug the frog into that

Buy a separate Hub or USB card and plug into that.

Why it happens;
The USB spec says that a device shouldn't draw more than 500ma (IIRC) and if it does the device should be shut down, and the frog does. Most chipsets ignore the spec and allow the device to carry on but VIA doesn't.

let me guess... you're using a via chipset on your motherboard?

I had the green little frog modem

The problem did not occur when I used Win ME.... but VIA + DAoC + Win ME does not go well together.

Switched to Win2k, and I could play daoc without problems.

I upgraded some drivers, namely the 4in1, and suddenly my modem was cutting out roughly once an hour.

i found it happend more to my ranged characters, than my melee ones. Could play my skald for 6 hours np, then crash after 5 mins with my wiz or scout.#

It also happend more often on excal than prydwen.

I tried everything, reinstalling drivers, getting USB drivers, both old and new.

Then one day my win2k directory got currupted.... had to reinstall everything... and viola! No more modem crashes.

World works in strange ways.

Using a seperately powered USB hub doesn't work... tried that.
If you don't like reinstalling your OS, I would reccomend you getting an ADSL router instead. I'm using one now, and my internet is a lot more stable than it was on my Frog modem
