1.4 has swining broken my Net connection for CS.

1.3, pinged fine on 56K and was playable. 1.4 ain't. not for me anyway.

why has it taken me so long to work this out, well i've been playing CS on LANs and this week is the first time I've had some spare time to try and get a bit of online CS.

I've checked through my config and various online "conenction guides" for CS and all is set to what it should be.

Even tried a different modem to no avail.

..or is it just me being thick and the fact that I'm on a modem I have to wait for all the new "steam/whatever" type shit to sort itself out for the first 5 minutes of connection?

This probably isn't it, but are you running ZoneAlarm?

Every time I boot the computer Zonealarm goes back to version 1.1.0.8 of the HL launcher. Every time I let it know that I allow 1.1.0.9.

The thing is that when I connect using ASE the ZoneALarm window is invisible. It is there 'cos I can connect by clicking in the bottom right corner of my screen, I just can't see the box, so I've got to guess.

The worse problem for me is that my computer will not switch off at all since HL 1.1.0.9, so every time I switch on I have to go through a scandisc. I have tried reinstalling HL and CS1.4, I have even downloaded the complete CS and HL patches, instead of the upgrades, but to no avail.

I've just been playing CS and I was pinging a steady 180 on the Jolt HPB 16 man server. There must be something that CS has fooked up during install, although I have no idea what :(

How do you do that then? I haven't really taken much notice of what is included in 1.4.

I just upgraded 1.3 to 1.4 the other week when the csv1314.exe & 11081109.exe came out.
Now for whatever reason, net play CS is unplayable. :(

i had the same prob with zonealarm what i did was open up c/s from your desktop without connecting to the net, and click "play c/s" the zonealarm pop up box should come up and ask u if you want to allow h/l launch to access the internet, click yes and then remamber my ansaw box in the left corner and it shound be fine.

just delete all the hl versions in zonealarm, then run hl, in software mode.

the reason its "going back" a version is becuse your not shutting down the PC correctly. therefore the new "reg key" or "mark" that ZoneAlarm uses hasn't updated to the new version of CS.

I'm not using ZA . Guess i'll reinstall HL & CS and see if that solves my problem.

Thanks Grimes,

Obvious really wasn't it? Just not to someone as stupid as me.

BTW I tried the other fixes, but with no luck. Because my comp won't shut down.

This is very clearly a problem with HL 1.1.0.9. When I use my computer for anything else I get no problems, I can shut down as normal. On the other hand I on ly have to open HL, not even play it, and when I come to shut down it won't.

I get no error messages, my screen goes black, no cursor even, and stays like that for as long as I can bear it before I pull the plug.

Some part of HL must stay open, even when the game shuts down, but how can I find this? ctrl-alt-del won't show it. Any ideas? I have uninstalled /installed too many times to do it again. I just think there is a hardware problem with my setup.

ah well, roll on the rebuild.

Have you tried running in a lower resolution with software mode?

Hi Tom,

I don't have to play the game at all for it to stop my computer from shutting down. Just open HL, then close it again.:(

What about running the default hl.exe, without any options? So that the animation and credits appear before the hl main menu?

Maybe its the cs menu?

I take it you are running ACPI, where the computer on/off button actually tells windows to shut down, rather than just cutting the power. Have you tried running windows in safe mode, starting hl, then turning off?

You might also consider that HL inadvertantly locks up a device on your computer. Try manually shutting down all programs before you power down.

Also, its a long shot, but check your video card drivers, and if you can't update them, get an older version (you'd be surprised how often this can help).

Bloody hell, I just did that BBC iq test, and about 10 questions I couldn't answer cos I couldn't click the buttons.

fecking shockwave, BAH, now Im scarred for life.:(

It gave me an IQ of 117, well I reckon it should be a bit higher then that, so I'm gonna send off for the proper mensa test, I think it should be around 125 or so.

Unless I did something wrong, BAH no wonder I keep walking into things.

how are you closing HL/CS? via "Quit" in the ingame menu's or are you typing "quit" into the console?

I always do the "quit" in the console thing as CS has always been a bit on the dodgy side of things when clicking out through the ingame menu's.

Anyone got a "standard" modemer config.cfg that i could borrow? I really dont fancy wiping HL/CS off my system and re installing.

..hmmm could delete config.cfg and see if the game re creates it?
