Right, I have Freeserve broadband 512k..

I have NO PROBLEM at all downloading from sites and whatnot, 60kb/s all the time. Uploading is also fine, constant 30kb/s.

When I download a file from user's (and its not just one user) I get 11 or less kb/s :(

Anyone know the reason? Some of these people im downloading from have 10mb connections..

Your connection is as fast as the slowest part of the chain. They may have 10mb connections and you may well have (576k?) bb however if there's a crap link somewhere or one end's bandwidth is being eaten by a load of simultaneous downloads/uploads then your transfer rates will suck. Most ADSL connections are contended as well which means you have a 576k connection only if noone else in your area is using it as 'your' connection is actually shared between a whole bunch of other people (typically 50:1 for domestic or 25:1 for business).
Try also checking your system for bandwidth hogs like p2p software, IMs or ftp programs.

some ISP's also prioratise traffic or cap it all together.

There was a major news item about BTInternet capping P2P applications, maybe freeserve have done this ? just a thought - check out dslguide.org.uk and the forums there to see if anyone else on freeserv has the same problem.

Well, on p2p programs I get 60kb/s

On single users, no matter who and ive tried quite a few I get 10kb/s or less, its been like this ever since I tried getting files from single users.

Ive tried dslguide and my download results seem okay..

I think im gona get a new ISP, as I can migrate to Pipex in a couple of hours and they seem to have a good rep, better speed then freeserve and its cheaper :D

Ok. Tomorrow im going to ring up PIPEX and get my ISP migrated to them.

Can I use my existing BT Voyager 100 modem with Pipex? If so, HOW? When I install drivers from the BT disk it installs BT broadband not just the driver :D

I'm on Pipex. Very good ISP in my experience.
I might be wrong but the 'BT voyager 1000' is actually an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem with a different case. In which case you can get drivers from here.
Pipex tech support should be able to tell you for sure.

because perhaps the user your downloading from has a capped upload. On P2P you maybe getting 1 file but from multiple users hence being able to achieve the your maximum dowload speed. 512k broadband doesnt mean 512k up and 512k down - its usually 512k down 128k up

just checked and pipex are

Upload Speed Up to 256Kbps

which would explain why you can upload at 30k

however alot of other isps use 128k up which may be users of which you are trying to download off.

i have 256k up can set up a download to test tonight if you want.
