Broadband not working on my desktop computer

For a few days now, my broadband connection has failed to work on my desktop computer: It can't load daoc, any webpages, or any chat programmes such as msn and aim. Howether when trying it on my laptop computer it runs smoothly, except daoc which never runs smoothly on my laptop.

Recently, daoc had done a small update that needed to be downloaded (this hasn't effected how broadband works on my computer), and it showed the time for loading the file as < 0.3kbps. This is rather slow for a broadband connection don't you think?

On prydwen, people have said that it might be a worm clogging up my system, but I can't access the internet to see if this is so. I have ran my virus checkers and found 2 virus's, that I deleted, but seems to not have effected this low kbps. I can't run system restore on my computer, tried that and it fails. I have also just had my computer restarted due to viruses from Kazaa.

I have howether ran DAoC only once during this, which was a miracle in some ways. I have no idea what I did, I was just experimenting stopping some processes, because I thought this 'lag' was effected by the CPU (It was really high, sometimes reaching 100%). Problem was I had no sound when I loaded DAoC successfully, so went dueling in Gothwaite.

So can any of you tech wizzies help me with this problem? If you can sort it out perfectly, there will be a cash reward ingame

Feel free to ask more questions if you need to know anything more, but thats about all I have done the past few days with my computer.

What OS are you using and how are you connecting the desktop via broadband? - directly using a USB device or using an ethernet card which goes through a router? Also try connecting via dial-up if possible to see if that works. If it doesnt work with dialup try removing and adding the communication windows components (under windows 98 i've had some spyware replace the default windows TCP/IP dll's with its own and pretty much disable my connection - not sure if that can happen under xp but worth a try).

If your connecting via ethernet then check if you can access the laptop (assuming its configured for that), if not reinstall your NIC drivers. If connecting using USB then reinstall the drivers for the USB controller and motherboard drivers.

Also scan for spyware (links to spyware removershere) and search google for everything thats in your processes window to see if your infected with something which your virus checker has failed to pick up or remove properly.

Last but not least, check if its got windows update set to update automatically - it could be possible that windows has updated and became incompatible with the router somehow (never heard of it happening but its possible.). Check the web site of the manufacturer of the router and any forums regarding your router and see if anybody has reported the same problems. If this has happened try updating the firmware on the router.

Hmm I had something almost the same thing. I rang up BT openworld and they advised me to do this which solved the prob for me: first do ctrl+alt+delete go into task manager -> processes and look for something with 6-8 numbers if there is one close it and also some other one i cant remember S). Run Norton Anti virus if you have it..I did and it picked up two viruses a sasser one and also the other one with the 6-8 numbers in it..DONT delete them (only going by norton here). Leave them in quarantin. Then open your Ineternet Explorer and go to www.microsoft.com then on the side click Windows update.
After that it should bring up a page saying checking your system for updates or something like that...wait for it to load and on that page there should be: How to Protect Yourself from the Sasser Worm and Other Attacks scroll down and click on read morellow all the steps on that page..hope it helps

the very nice CIH32 virus practically killed the cybercafe where i worked, it took a 10mbit line to 56k speeds. It even got on our server so we had to wipe everything to be sure. Norton ghost for teh win

Using the gimpy Windows XP Home edition on my desktop, and connected via Alcatel, a USB device. Will try connecting through cable tonight, else try others advise.

Also windows update doesn't work on my laptop. Hardly connect to the internet on there so doesn't matter so much on my laptop. No idea what it does on my desktop, hardly see it up. Will ofc check later when I am back at home.

Also don't have spyware atm. I have adware, and Windows AVG.

If the worse comes to the worse, can always restart the computer once again

Networking is at 0%, occasionally rising slightly. CPU is 100% and not moving.

Recon thats the problem as USB devices use CPU to run moreso than ethernet - meaning that 100% CPU usage is pretty much perma disabling your device.

Restarted computer now and seems its been fixed..

Only bad thing is the 1 min countdown timer is back . And windows explorer doesn't work for this computer so I can't fix it. Can you remind me of the file to download to fix it, from microsoft.com?

Anyway, will be back in game in another 23% that I need to download.

OK follow this process to get rid of that

Start > Run and type "SERVICES.MSC /S" without the "

Scroll down to find "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)"

Right click it and head to properties goto the recovery tab and select take no action for all 3 attempts to retry..

Apply

This will give you time to remove the worm and patch windows..

Then go here http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html and download the free removal tool
