I have a problem with my Boradband connection. It is a 2Mb connection from Bulldog ADSL. Its Running on Windows XP Pro with SP1A. Had repeated line tests from them and repeated line tests from BT. Every hour or so, browsing speeds slow down then the connection appears to die. Both of the Green lights are lit on my Modem which indicates there should be an ADSL connection. I dont use any P2P file sharing programmes so there is nothing running in the background. When I am playing DC on line my ping can be a steady 25 then it can go right upto 800 and then keep fluctuating for a few minutes. It will then settle or I get disconnected from the server

I have tried at least 5 new microfilters with little or no effect. What is the possible cause of this and what can I do to remedy it ?

Thanks

More than likely a PC problem than a connection one. USB modems use cpu cycles and drivers so are more prone to problems than say a router. Do you know anyone with a spare router you can try. If you can afford it it's normally the best way to go.

If it was a problem with the line itself you'd lose sync with the exchange and lose your steady green light.

Do you have a USB ADSL device, or a router? A Babs says a router is a much better idea as it takes all the overhead off you're computer (you use ethernet instead), plus the USB drivers tend to be shite!

On a router setting the link-timeout is easy (it's generally well sign-posted), on a driver....

if its USB update the USB drivers, works all the time for me ;) it is 99% of the time a power management problem

Jeez I am confused now.

As it is a single PC not a network is it necessary to have a router ? If so would you go for an ADSL router with built in modem and firewall ?

tris- What do you mean by a power management problem ?

USB is notorious for power related problems, especially if you have a device sharing the other port on the pair that's powering your modem.

You can get single port routers, so it's not just for networks. And yes, an ADSL modem router is just the job, and will invariably have a firewall built in. Here is one for under £35, you can probably pick up a 4 port for no more than a fiver more.

ash, power management as in your drivers arnt controling the power correctly so your modem doesnt get a constant stream of power. all you need to do is update your chipset/usb drivers.
